Remember to support your local black metal band to day!
« on: June 06, 2006, 01:39:16 pm »

Black metal was after all created in Norway, so I feel obligated to encourage everybody to listen to some oldschool black to day, the 6/6/6!  ;D

(Listening to Burzum A.K.A. Varg Vikernes currently on permanent tour of the Norwegian prison system after murdering his rival Øystein Aarseth in 1993 - Dunkelheit from Filosofem)

Listening to Mercyful Fate (dansish act, more gimmick and image than real black metal, but very good music and musicians) with The Oath from Don't Break the Oath (no huge price to those who can guess oath to whom...)

Listening to Iron Maiden (presentation should be needless) with The Number of the Beast from The Number of the Beast. Not really black metal, but it fits in the general theme...

Listening to the news on TV2 - iTunes are breaking Norwegian law and may be fined! They are breaking consumer fair use laws.

Update: The cultural minister says that you must be allowed to play music you have bought on any kind of device. And the big, expensive lawyers have started calling the Norweigan Consumer's agency (governmental agency fighting for consumer's rights).

An Englishman and a Norwegian woman celebrated the day by getting married in Hell, which is a small place north of Trondheim. Well, a bad marriage can be hell... Let's wish 'em luck!

There's a Hell, Michigan here in the U.S. I think they've got a big party planned.

I think Robert Heinlein wrote a book called "The Number of the Beast". I didn't like it at all (except as an early teenager).

I've seen the most curious logic in several news articles: somewhere in the bible it says "no one shall know the time of the second coming", and therefore today, 06/06/06 will *NOT* be the day the world ends :)

What's black metal? Any free stuff available on the web (legal free stuff, I mean)?

Wikipedia: Black metal is a sub-genre of heavy metal, which properly started in the early 1990's, though its inspirations were formed in the early 1980's.

There are two views on the genre. One views black metal as a very specific form of music that must adhere to a particular 'style' in order for it to be a part of the genre; while the second considers the lyrical and philosophical/political ideology of the music to take more precedence in defining the genre itself, rather than 'style,'

Me again: Basically it's more or less extreme metal with occult or satanistic lyrics, often with pagan themes woven in. Norwegian bands are amongst the most popular, and the viking heritage supposedly is connected to that. In my opinion the norwegians are biggest for two reasons:
1. They make good gengre music and don't care too much about commercialism, which make them appeal to the coll crowd.

2. They were the first to discover that burning down churches were a good way to get notoriety and fame. And this is not a joke! In the earlly 90's there was a string of churches lit on fire in Norway of black metal musicians and followers.

I'm afraid I don't know of any free, legal music, though. :(

Listening to: Eagles, Hotel California from Hotel California. I know it's an urban legend, but still it's a fun one: Eagles were devil worshippers, and the person on the inner cover was the leader of Church of Satan. The real story: http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/hotel.htm'

Oh, and for those interested: The Last Resort from the same album is the real icy religion commentary from Eagles.

Edit: Two more tracks and I'll stop my idle chatter.

Listening to: Venom - Black Metal. The band that first tried to start a movement, and the track that gave the genre name. They inspired the next generation ten years later, when it really took off. Unfortunately not the best musicians in the world, but historically interesting.

Finally: Listening to Satyricon - Now, Diabolical - full album. Brand new, a proof that the genre is still alive and kicking...or should that be dead and smelly? ;) Especially The Pentagram Burns and That Darkness Shall Be Eternal. Which concludes my private 6/6/6 celebration.

And I'm really glad I didn't have to resort to watching the premiere of The Omen, in my opinion new versions of classic movies, especially horror movies, are the real and true evil! Demonically bad, most of them... Mastiff out.

I wouldn't count on it. Just look at the global warming and all the bad music produced nowadays. But since I write this 06-06-07, I guess you were right after all :)

Are you kidding, the only decade with truly bad music was the 80s :P

It's gotten much better since, me thinks, just about the time i stopped listening to top of the pops.
