What would you recommend for me?

Some of my fave films offf the top of my head are

City of lost children
The trouble with harry (old hitchcock film)
Rear window (old hitchcock film)
The wicker man
Starship troopers
Dune

Any suggestions for vids to buy that I might like based on my faves ?

classy films i'd forgotten about

there was also a good ww2 film about a sub that was painted pink - Operation Petticoat (cary grant, tony curtis) that i should get as well

off the top of my head i have about 1000 movies On DVD and I have many of the classics on VHS and DVD.

The Vikings Is another film with Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis

Along With "The Spartans"

Tony Curtis Played on many Classic Movies

Mutiny On The Bounty starring Errol Flynn as Fletcher Christian, and Charles Laughton as captain Bligh. Is also another movie to get and there are many other versions of it. I think i have 3 or 4 of the re-makes of this movie.

The 10 Commandments With Charlton Heston As Moses And Yul Brynner As Rameses.

If you're a fan of early Hitchcock, I suggest you run with it! Try "Rope", another Jimmy Stewart film, this shot in only one scene around a trunk in an apartment that contains a dead man who's late to show up for the party. More Hitch--"notorious". Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman and neo-nazi spies. My personal favorite, "North by Northwest", an older Cary Grant caught between foreign agents and the CIA in a chance mistaken identity. Most feel "Vertigo" is Hitchcock's best, but I find it very cold, almost mean-spirited. Still, it is easily Hitch's most eery film. Jimmy s. stars, although he's not so easy-going.

Based on the two films you mentioned, which are typical of Hitch's early work, I think you're going to like a lot of his stuff, and there is a lot of it that is not well-known. Look for boxed sets, and you can't go wrong!

rope WAS a great film

a lot of these films i plan to get now that you've all reminded me of them
you know what it's like - seen it on tv a long time ago, never got around to buying them and now i can afford to get a boat load i can't remember the good ones while the bad ones are stuck in my head like evil burning pointy things

If you liked Starship Troopers, Aliens (the second one) is a must have.

It's true, "Aliens" is a good match for Starship Troopers (and a better film). But in confonting the Alien/Aliens quandry, I have to vote for the original. It succeeds as action/suspense/horror, and doesn't suffer from Cameron's trademark dead spots in the storytelling (sorry, Jimbo). However, "Aliens" is probably the best cinematic FPS experience out there.

Among SciFi, fans of Hitchcock will like the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" with Tab Hunter. It is the eeriest scifi movieout there is, IMO, as well as the genesis for the term "Pod People".

I have aliens 1 and 2 - great films

Starship troopers is one of my friday-night-had-a-few-beers-and-am-not-in-the-mood-to-think films
So is 'Bring It On' (even though I hate to admit it, it probably seen more plays than it should have

) and 'Jersey Girl'

Other suprisingly good films that nobody seems to have heard of are
'Two Men Went To War' - roughly based on a real WW2 incident where two army dentist went awol to invade france
'The Dish' with Sam Neil - telling the story of an Australian radio telescope that became the main relay for the first moonwalk when Mr Armstrong et al decided they were not going to wait after landing on the moon
'The Cube' 1 & 2

Aaaaah, many a fine night I've had at a Birmingham UK cinema that did all night 'themed' film shows
'body snatchers', 'creature from the black lagoon' (in 3d!!! answering the 'why do things keep being shot toward the viewer' question) etc, sci-fi nights

No worries here though, - I had pretty much assumed you'd seen it, but thought I should mention it just in case (I'm sure it woud be a crime somewhere or other if I hadn't mentioned such a briliant film)

If you think of anything else that's good, i'd be very happy to hear about it (so far your tastes are really close to mine (apart from me having a fondness for really crapy films after a few beers) )

there are two films I've watched and thoroughly enjoyed, and whenever I mention them, hardly anyone has heard of them, which I find frustrating, and in the case of 'Birdy', quite surprising...

'Hawks' starring Timothy Dalton and Anthony Edwards, is, believe it or not, a very funny story about two terminally ill cancer patients who steal an ambulance. I often feel like the only person who has ever seen this movie!

'Birdy' with Matthew Modine and Nicholas Cage leading is what I'd describe as a "buddy" movie, told around flashbacks to episodes in vietnam.
This is, imo, well worth watching. The review on its imdb page is a good one, and better than anything I could have written!

One of my favourite films is "Cool Hand Luke" (Paul Newman). I don't really know why either. I first watched it on Saturday afternoon TV at a friends house when I was just 14, seen it countless times since, and enjoy it every time.

Starship Troopers vs. Alien/Aliens? for me, it would be Aliens. I've only seen Starship Troopers the once, and remember it as an enjoyable film that didn't ask too much from me, but I've never felt compelled to sit through it again. Alien/Aliens were awesome films I'd watch over again, but thought that No.3 and the resurrection were pushing it a little.

As for James Stewart, one of my favourite James Stewart movies is "Harvey". Class!

'Hawks' cought be suprise - I never expected to like it but, what the hell do I know!

Amongst a bundle of vids i bought was 'The Matador' with Pierce Brossn

I had assumed It'd be bad (going on past form), but I was bored and had nothing else to watch

Just goes to show how stupid I am

Ask any uk person 'romans they go houses?' or 'I'm Brian and so's my wife' and we'll know what it's from

While I agree Monty Python epitomizes (the perplexing) British Humor, I always laugh when Brits try to lay claim to Terry Gilliam, an American and the weirdest Python in the bunch.

Speaking of Monty Python, my 12 year old daughter who lives with her mother thousands of miles away, told me that she watched Monty Python & the Holy Grail and absolutely loved it. She did say she needed to turn on the captions though to understand it all

(U.S. here). I told her if she liked that she would need to check out Life of Brian and perhaps Meaning of Life, if not other Flying Circus stuff.

Take heart, you're not alone! I'd also give a vote for 'The Dish' - top of the pile when it comes to understated humour. I'm surprised that 'Fargo' and 'Spinal Tap' have gone unmentioned, and if you fancy something about Australian competition ballroom dancing, try 'Strictly Ballroom' - it's corny and kitsch, and very funny.

Interesting - hadn't heard of this one.
Along the same lines: '84 Charlie Mopic' - my favorite Vietnam movie. AFAIK, never released on dvd.
