Stop Button
« on: June 27, 2006, 11:11:51 am »

This was the subject of some internal debate.

Can you figure out how to stop the player without using the menu?

I just hit Pause... I never quite understood the reason to have a stop...

I use stop sometimes when I have crossfade turned on, but I want to quickly hear the beginning of a "new" song without the "crossfade" from the previously playing track (which sometimes happens when I'm tagging).  I click stop then double click the "new" track.

It's also nice for Video playback as it makes the screen go black (which is sometimes useful -- watching a certain scene in The Sopranos and the neighbor's 4 year old walks over).  Again... I'm itching to get home.  Darnit!

Sometimes Stop Would Also Close All Devices\Files

And Pause

Would Keep The File Open And You Could Not Edit Or Modify The File.

In Apple iTunes This Is A Problem Where You need To Play Another File Or Close iTunes To Close A File So You Can lets Say Move it.

Update: It seems MC12 also does not let go of the file when pause is pressed

The tooltip said what to do.
I'd like to see the option to stop after this selection.

I might get used to it, but for now:
I dislike not having a Stop button. I don't know the reason why a media player shouldn't have one. I believe you'll get alot of confused people just because of this.

I don't know...

iTunes doesn't have one.  I don't really know that it's needed (especially if there's some other tooltip-explained method for stopping anyway).  If it makes the interface a little cleaner, then I'm all for it (as long as we don't lose functionality).  Again, because I'm stuck at work I haven't seen it yet (just a few more hours)...

However, we do still need to be able to access the Stop function through the command line and windows message interface.  My remotes already have a stop button afterall!

I actually didn't realize I still had the option of stopping.

A quick thought:
In MC11, if you edit the tags or similar and then pause for a long period (minutes though), you render an "error writing to file".

This definitively should be taken under consideration, since people will using pause alot more with the new implementation.

It seems that only the "Noire" skin lacks an actual Stop button. The others have one but also offer the "double click to stop" option on the play button.
I like the "Noire" skin. Less cluttered is better.

Every piece of audio and video equipment I have ever owned always had a Stop button and I really don't see a reason to get rid of it. Pause is not the same as Stop.

There many reasons for having direct access to both the Stop and Pause buttons, some of which have already been mentioned.

I'm going to be getting a Touchscreen very soon and it would seem that not having the Stop button on the interface would make using a touchscreen more cumbersome.

And lastly, how does removing this one button from the interface really help make it less cluttered?

Switching back and forth between Noire and skins that have a stop button, I've decided that I like the Noire system better--no stop button.  I think a play/pause/stop convention as in Noire is much simpler once you get used to it.  If you want to make it plainer, make the main button even bigger.

One problem with the new system.
It's now even more difficult to get a freeze frame than it was already!

Everytime you double click the play button it stops, instead of moving
slightly onward.

I guess it would be useful if you could tell MC to go to a point on a track numerically?
Someone else mentioned that somewhere the other day.
