ActiveMovie window popping-up when playing AVIs (Yaobing)
« on: June 29, 2006, 01:25:55 pm »

Hi, I'm starting this thread since the problem could be specific to my setup.

Basically, when I start playing an AVI video-clip, instead of playing in the "Playing Display" window, it actually does it in a popped up "ActiveMovie" window (unskinned), separate from MC. I first thought it was because of the new "display view" design., but Yaobing answered in the build thread that such "ActiveMovie" should not appear.

As per Yaobing request, this is what I see when i click on Directshoe Filters ---> Current Filters:

Video Renderer
Default Directsound Device
VideoMixingRenderer 9
MPEG Layer-3 Decoder
XviD MPEG-4 Decoder

Greyed out:
AVI Splitter
File Source (Async.)

Other info, in case it is relevant:

Set Display ----> DirectX

Video Playback Settings ---->
(Video Controls, such as brightness, contrast, etc, are greyed out)

More DirectShow Options---->
under "Not Use DirectShow" ---> mp4
under "Use DirectShow" -----> A bunch of extensions, including .avi and .divx

Hope it helps to narrow down the problem. Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks in advance.

Just as I suspected, DirectShow inserted "Video Renderer" and disregarded the "VideoMixingRenderer 9" which I inserted. The solution on my part is to detect such a situation and deal with it.

On your part you might want to think about why VMR9 can not be used on your system. One possibility is that "XviD MPEG-4 Decoder" is not compatible with VMR9.  If this is the case, a work-around for you is to use FFDShow. The FFDShow video decoder can decode Divx and Xvid formats and is compatible with VMR9.

Quote
Video Playback Settings ---->
(Video Controls, such as brightness, contrast, etc, are greyed out)

Yes, this is relevant. Video control is available only with VMR9, or legacy Video Renderer, not with the default Video Renderer (Video Mixing Renderer 7) on XP.

Either that or ensure you are running the current XviD build.  I'd probably just use FFDSHOW though.  When I get home I can post links to a good, safe, recent build (some of the June nightlies are dangerous though, and can break MPEG-2 encoding and playback).

A good place to look for current FFDSHOW builds is http://x264.nl/

Yaobing,

Just in case it is relevant, it worked fine with MC 11.1.
I finally installed MC 12 on top of it so I cannot confirm whether it' would still be working in MC 11.1 or not, but nothing else has changed in my system apart from installing MC.12.
Actually I was playing video clips in MC 11.1 right before installing MC.12

Glynor,
I appreciate your help in this issue. Hopefully Yaobing can find a solution, since honestly I'm not very aware of all this xvid, divx, ffdshow stuff.

Thanks.

Just for Info.
On the machine that was doing it on the machine i was on the
other day, the only codec I had downloaded was the latest one
from DIVX themselves, as in http://www.divx.com/

but then thats exactly the same as this machine...
(both set up by me!)...
and this one works...

Yes, it works in MC11 because we did not try to use Video Mixing Renderer 9, especially we did not try to use VMR9 in Windowless mode.

That is also the reason we do not have video controls in MC11.

The solution will be simple. When it happens I just need to make sure to harness the ActiveMovie window and put it inside our application window. This is only as a fall-back. I still will try to use VMR9 in windowless mode when possible.

from DIVX themselves, as in http://www.divx.com/

[shudder]

You may want to read this.  That's comparing using the codecs to create video (not just view it), but official DivX isn't really all that and a bag of chips.

Generally, for VFW playback, FFDSHOW is where it's at.  If you're not creating videos yourself (recompressing them, converting them, etc) then you don't need to have the codecs themselves installed at all generally.

One of these days I'll switch over to using MKV and x264 for my encodes.  Basically I need a VirtualDub-like tool that works with x264.  Until some of the developers get over themselves though (or len0x comes back and blesses us with an AutoGK for x264), I don't see it happening too soon.   :(

=) 4 Years worth of computer science degree, and you still
might as well be talking japaneese  :)

I'll try unloading Divx, and downloading FFDShow on both machines and see what happens.

Eh... This is a screenshot of my desktop at work right now (well, a minute ago before I started typing this message):

It's what I do.  Computer Science is Computer Science.  Video editing is video editing.

(And I don't even come close to fully understanding it all.  I'm sure Yaobing has a much better handle on DirectShow chains and filters and codecs than do I.)

Actually, it's quite good to test this because... Like it or not, DivX has name recognition and people will use it.  It needs to be able to work using all of the weird, semi-broken VFW codecs out there.  At least the popular ones.

Just don't use the most recent FFDSHOW from http://x264.nl/ (build 2546).  I was using it for a while and it was horribly broken (completely screwed up my BeyondTV install).

I'll look at what I'm using at home when I get there and try to remember to post it.

Yaobing,

This solution would be perfect to me. Actually, my first bug report was to let you know that once resized to cover the "Playing Display", the ActiveMovie window did not remember its size and position for the next video-clip.

If you get it to "anchor" inside MC "Playing Display" and to adapt its size to it, I'm more than happy.

Thanks.

I'll try the new build as soon as I get home this evening. Unfortunately, builds .29 and .30 gave a Visual C++ error upon playing videos, so I'm still with .28

Will let you know later today.

Thank you.

First the good news: The videos play in their window and the ActiveMovie window is gone.

Now the bad news: I'm still getting the runtime C++ error as soon as a video starts playing. It keeps on playing as long as I do not accept the error window message. When I do that, MC just closes down.

I'm gonna revert back to build .028  in a few moments unless you instruct me otherwise. That was the latest build that payed my videos fine (though with the ActiveMovie popping-up).

Let me know if I can be of any assistance to track down the problem.

Thank you.

Please try build 32. Although I have not identified anything that maybe related to the crash you described, there has been some fixes in thumbnail building.

If you still get crashes, please email me a log file (with Playback log type turned on).

Also, try selecting a different video decoder if you have one.

Hi Yaobing, thnak you very much for yout interest. Just installed new build .032 and the Runtime C++ error appears as soon as a video clip (avi) starts to play. No probem with audio files. As I told before, those same videos play fine with build .028 and the problem started with build .029. Something must have been changed between build .028 and .029 that makes this problem arise.

I have the log file ready for you. Let me know where do I have to send it. Thanks.

Also, try selecting a different video decoder if you have one.

I'm affraid that my knowledge of all this video decoders stuff is very limited, sorry. I'm not positive that I had never installed one if it did not came with Media Center or the program that I use for ripping my DVDs.

Could you please help me a little bit with this? How can I find out whether I have another one? Is it something that I can download or buy?  I have no problem in buying one if that solves the problem... so if you know of one that could help to solve this problem without creating a new one, I'm ready to download or buy it.

Thanks for your patience. I will revert back to build .028 in the meantime.

Hi Yaobing,

Unfortunately, the C++ runtime error continues to appear here as soon as an "avi" video file starts playing with this new build .033. A new log is on the way to your email address. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Will revert back to 028 in the meantime.

It seems that Doof had similar problems with the previous build. It'd be good to know how it works for him with this new build.

Thanks for your patience, Yaobing.

I'm opening a new thread on the specific C++ Runtime error, after having exchanged some emails with Yaobing. Moderators feel free to close this thread.

Thank you.
