Sound problems

Hey guys,
    I have the strangest problem with my sound.  My sound works with media center and media player, but it basicly doesnt work with anything else.  Also I can not turn the sound up or down in media center or using the remote, media center says the sound is at 0 but there is sound comming out of the speakers and I cannot move the sound volume off 0.  Any advice would be appriciated.

You dont by any chance have multiple sound cards installed? Maybe one onboard and one extra? If so, try disabling/removing the unused.
