I have installed MC12 next to MC11, so no upgrade.
I restored a MC11 backup.
To bad it does not restore:
> Startup settings
> General Settings
> DSP settings
> Zones
> and much more that I will run into.

It would be very nice to be able to restore these settings also by backup and restore functionality, I think.

Please share your thoughts.

It would not only be useful for migrating from one MC to another, but also for doing full synchronizing between two pc's or a pc and a notebook!

Hey, MS Office has a feature called "Save my settings" and "restore my settings"

Just to clarify, are you only referring to using an MC11 backup in MC12, or does this also pertain to using a backup made in MC12?

In general. I missed items when restoring a MC11 backup in MC12.
As far as I know, the backup of MC12 also has those gaps.

Are we missing other (easy) possibilities to do this?

I backup my library and JRiver registry settings regularly using scripts I wrote, and don't really use the built-in backup utility (which has to be run manually). I have my scripts automated to run automatically through Scheduled Tasks (the Library backup is part of my Library sharing system posted over here)...

So I don't really have an issue I guess...

I agree that it would be nice to be able to migrate other settings between systems if desired. HOWEVER, I don't think it's a good idea to just include this in a library backup since this could cause problems when restoring a library on a different system. It would not necessarily be desireable to have things like Zone settings, access ratings, DSP settings, etc. trasnferred to a different system since these things are often system specific.

I copy my entire library to a different system and load the library backup onto this system. Since I purposefully use the same path, everything works on the new system -- i.e. the restored library correctly points to all the media. I would NOT want, however, things like DSP and Access ratings to copy over since these are specifically different on each system.

Perhaps the best solution might be some form of checklist that you could go over when restoring, where you could select which settings (or categories of settings) you wanted transferred.

With a "SaveRestore my Settings" feature you could specifically define which items should be transfered and which not!

I agree. IF something like this were implemented, it saving settings would have to remain separate from saving the Library.

Again, I'm not sure why saving HKCU/Software/JRiver/ to a REG file for an occasional backup of the settings is that hard (and I do regularly restore that settings file on other machines, just don't restore HKLM/Software/JRiver/ to another machine as that'll break your MC install).

I'll try to clean up my REG saving script a little and post it here. Maybe next week...

Believe me. For many people this is way to technical. I know a lot of people (including myself) that stay away from anyting that includes the registry.
I know people that use MC that even do not know that the registry is there.
They just wonder why certain settings can not be transferred to another system.

Talking about saving settings from the registry, check out ERUNT at http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

This is a very fast save the entire registry freeware tool. It can also be set to back up the registry everytime the computer is started so that way you don't have to remember to do it.

I think most people here are somehow IT-cracks that can easily deal with the registry. But I feel those days are over, where you want to re-script every single application to your own taste.
I remember having reconfigured a complete Unix System in the 80ies to my own taste and standard. But I also remember the faces of the support people when they wanted to install some apps

The reason I use my scripts is that they are better than any built-in-to-MC solution. That's because I can use the plain old Windows Scheduled Tasks app to schedule backups, which will happen with or without MC running at the time.

I prefer to have one place to manage my recurring and scheduled tasks, so even if MC offered this capability, I wouldn't use it (and why have yet another memory resident app doing scheduling).

I don't really need schedueld backups of my settings, or library. Just the option to backup settings in the regular backup tool to make it more useful.
