Any comments from J River?
My guess would be that they don't want to get sued (or more likely, threatened to be sued). Lyrics-providing sites, by definition, violate ASCAP copyright on the songs they distribute the lyrics to (unless they've obtained permission from each and every artist they provide lyrics for).
Recently, companies have been going after authors of software that even provide an interface to obtain lyrics available elsewhere
even when the software doesn't "host" those files itself (such as PearLyrics linked-to above). It is certainly dubious whether or not a lawsuit against this type of software would be successful, but often the threat of a lawsuit is enough to quash the activity.
Sad, but true. I personally think the "infotainment" industry is completely out of control with these lawsuits against their own customers. How does distributing lyrics so that your customers can better enjoy their purchases hurt your business?
Either way... I wouldn't count on JRiver offering anything similar. If you don't like it, write your congressional representatives and join the EFF.
