[ANN] Official JRiver last.fm/audioscrobbler plugin Beta 4
« on: October 11, 2006, 03:24:58 pm »

Hi All,

The next beta of the official JRiver plugin can be downloaded here:

http://www.jdnet.co.uk/jriver/as_beta.zip

*IMPORTANT* - Please uninstall any previous Beta as well as clearing out the files in this directory (if you have it):

<Documents and Settings>\<User>\Application Data\J River\last.fm\

This is a stand-alone module at the moment (i.e. download the .ZIP file, extract the .EXE and run it) but in the future it may be merged into the main MC program.

When you first fire up MC after installation you will be prompted to enter your username/password, after clicking OK MC will start registering the following filetypes:

  *.mp3,*.wav,*.ogg,*.flac,*.ape,*.mpc,*.wma,*.wv

If there's any other audio filetypes I have missed let me know.

Please post any bug reports in this thread.

Here's what's new since the previous beta:

Fixed issue where the track submission code could terminate
Added ability to filter submission using an MC search
Added progress dialog for fetching buddy info.

If there are no problems with this then I will release this as v1 shortly since it's functional.   I'll then look at the other enhancements people have asked for, e.g. recommendations, iPod support

P.S.  If anyone is using the PlayingNow plugin I suggest you make sure that the last.fm support in it is disabled or else you will be registering your tracks twice!

thanks for the update, I'll be testing it shortly.

One observation about the brand new filter: it would seem more intuitive to filter songs that should not be submitted to last.fm, but maybe it's just my personal impression. Anyway, what would be the syntax for, say, a filter that would submit songs from all genre but podcast? That's the kind of thing I'd like to achieve with the filter: not submit podcasts and webmedia.

I have no idea about filters but I think it would be something like:

filename=[FILENAME] -genre=podcast

Also I did it this way to match the extensions filter.

I think having the file exclusions filter songs that should not be submitted to last.fm would be less confusing, and less work for the user. Plus, it seems to work only only with  standard library fields.

I'm still getting the thread termination error message and still have to restart the computer for the plug-in to submit again.

edit: forgot to enter a typical entry from the log when I get the error:

Code: [Select]
13/10/2006 11:41:28.281 (       14) > Timeout
13/10/2006 11:41:28.265 (       13) > Saving queue to C:\Documents and Settings\Guillaume\Application Data\J River\last.fm\Queue.txt ... 1 entries
13/10/2006 11:41:28.265 (       12) > Added 1 entries to queue
13/10/2006 11:41:28.250 (       11) > Wait status 1
13/10/2006 11:41:28.109 (       10) > Qualified files: 22275
13/10/2006 11:41:27.906 (        9) > Issuing the following search criteria:
13/10/2006 11:39:49.421 (        8) > Waiting for something to do ...
13/10/2006 11:39:49.406 (        7) > AS plugin initialised
13/10/2006 11:39:49.406 (        6) > AS thread started
13/10/2006 11:39:49.406 (        5) > AS thread starting
13/10/2006 11:39:49.406 (        4) > Loaded 0 entries
13/10/2006 11:39:49.406 (        3) > Loading queue from C:\Documents and Settings\Guillaume\Application Data\J River\last.fm\Queue.txt
13/10/2006 11:39:49.390 (        2) > Created EventShutdown=0x5b0   EventData=0x5ac
13/10/2006 11:39:49.375 (        1) > Initialising AS plugin

and I should add that there's one improvement: the files put in the queue when submission fails are now properly submitted after I restart my computer.

I think having the file exclusions filter songs that should not be submitted to last.fm would be less confusing,

I disagree with that.

Your primary filter is the file extension which includes all of the audio files you want to submit (which is what the plugin is all about).   You then remove that which you don't want submitted.   This is generally a smaller subset than that which you do want submitted.

However it's a personal preference:

Hey, I want all of these (*.mp3)
But I don't want these guys

Compared to :

Hey, I want all of these (*.mp3)
But only if it's one of these guys

So I'll consider adding a checkbox that you can declare the inclusion/exclusion, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Plus, it seems to work only only with  standard library fields.

It should support anything which the search field in MC supports.   If you have something that doesn't work please give an exact example so I can ask J River to look into it.

Sorry, I don't see a termination error message in there.   What are you getting?   Also what search criteria are you using to qualify 22K tracks?   Remember this will slow down the plugin quite drastically since MC will have to take a note of these qualifying tracks.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it looks like it is just not writing anything to the "Queue.txt" file.  When I open that file it is empty.  My StatusLog shows O entries for submission:

13/10/2006 16:06:51.909 (       19) > Waiting for something to do ...
13/10/2006 16:06:51.889 (       18) > AS thread started

13/10/2006 16:06:51.879 (       10) > Wait status 0
13/10/2006 16:06:51.869 (        9) > Shutting down AS thread

13/10/2006 16:05:42.599 (        3) > Loading queue from C:\Documents and Settings\Allen Rendel\Application Data\J River\last.fm\Queue.txt

Am I stupid? (don't answer that)  Is there something I should be doing other than playing the files in Media Jukebox in order for them to qualify for submission?

P.S.  I am glad to see this plugin being worked on as it is something I have wished MJ had for quite some time!

You need to put it on a publicly available server and then link to it here.

I'm not using the filter yet because I find it counter-intuitive at this stage. I'm with sithlord on this one. I think that, once the filetype to submit have been defined, typical users want to submit everything, except for a few things, mainly defined by genre (podcasts, and web media). I think most users will want to exclude a couple genres rather than include just one or two. But let's see if others are confused by this.

About my log, here's a longer version (I still cut a bit in the middle):

When using the advanced filter "genre=blues" the plugin submits blues tracks. But, it also submits everything else! Am I using the correct syntax for my filter? Also, what should multiple entries be separated by?

If it's anything like the syntax for smartlists, comma.

My question is, what about entries that contain a space? I've tried to use brackets:

-genre=[web media]

but it doesn't seem to work.

What type of tracks are you playing?   Where are you playing them from?   As fas as the plugin is concerned nothing has been pulled from MC.

Can you search for it in the main MC search box?

Edit ...

Just read the documentation and it says you need to use the Field() expression (http://www.jrmediacenter.com/DevZone/DBExpressions.htm)

No, you need to add filename=[FILENAME] to qualify the file being processed.

Read the section entitled "Smartlist and Search - Rules and Modifiers" in the MC documentation.

I think all we're talking about is a minus sign, for example currently to submit all MP3s except podcasts you would use:

Extension: *.mp3
Expression: filename=[FILENAME] -genre=podcast

But you are suggesting:

Extension: *.mp3
Expression: filename=[FILENAME] genre=podcast

Actually I just had a thought.  It seems a bit mad having two sets of filters when they can be handled by the MC Search function.   So I am going to make one quick final change either today or tomorrow.   I am going to get rid of the extensions filter and combine it into the expressions filter and automagically add file filename=[FILENAME] expression at the beginning.   Then the search becomes an "only submit if it matches" filter.

So the default expression supplied will be:

Filetype=mp3,wav,ogg,flac,ape,mpc,wma,wv

(Remember the filename=[FILENAME] will be added automatically internally to select the file being processed)

The you can add on your own selection criteria, e.g.:

Filetype=mp3,wav,ogg,flac,ape,mpc,wma,wv -genre=podcasts

An update ... I've just changed the filter as I mentioned above and it's much simplier now.   I'll release B5 later today.

Seems much more reasonable to me. I absolutely didn't get the filename thing before, I thought it was just an example and wasn't mandatory.

I am playing mp3s (all tagged) in Media Jukebox 8.0.  I can see that the last.fm plugin is listed in the Plug-in manager and appears to be running (insofar as the option it gives me for the plugin is "stop"), but nothing seems to be happening with it.

Does the plugin work only in Media Center and not in Media Jukebox?

What type of tracks are you playing?   Where are you playing them from?   As fas as the plugin is concerned nothing has been pulled from MC.

No, you need to add filename=[FILENAME] to qualify the file being processed.

I couldn't get it to work with filename=[FILENAME] as a qualifier. When I use this advanced filter mediatype=audio -genre=bootleg,comedy,misc the plugin works perfectly.

Thanks for pointing me to "Smartlist and Search - Rules and Modifiers" in the MC help.

Heh. I spoke too soon. When I used my advanced filter the search returns "Qualified files: 11758" to the logfile. With filename=[FILENAME] in place of mediatype=audio the search returns 0 qualified files.

However with the 11758 qualified files returned, files that don't quaify are being submitted to last.fm in addition to the ones that do.

I'm pretty sure this syntax is right, mediatype=audio -genre=bootleg,comedy,misc, because if I enter it into the main MC search box or a smartlist, it gives the right output. A list of audio files, excluding genres of bootleg, comedy, or misc.

I hope my postings aren't muddying the waters further!

Looks like it since everyone else here is using MC 11+

Here's another log and I have more details about what happened this time. I lost my internet connection some time between 16:00 and 16:15. Submissions kept failing afterwards, even though I had my connection back. Upon closing MC (at around 19:11) I got the dreaded error message.

Restarting windows will probably clear the issue again.

It's definately not a plugin issue as it's your Windows TCP/IP stack which is reporting error 12002, which is timeout:

http://windowssdk.msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms737108(VS.80).aspx

So your network stack cannot connect to the URL: http://post.audioscrobbler.com/?hs=true&p=1.1&c=jmo&v=0.1&u=l0th

Ouch. This is bad news as I have no idea of where to start to fix this:

this is beyond the limit of my computer knowledge. I had a look at the page, but it doesn't give me a clue about how to fix the issue.

Anyway, I'm sorry it looks like I can't really test your plug-in on my system. I'll certainly keep using it though and hope I'll lose my internet connection as rarely as possible...

I'll add more debugging to the next version to try and help identify why the OS thinks your not connected.

Replace the Dll in the installation directory with the version in this file:

http://www.jdnet.co.uk/jriver/int_AudioScrobbler.zip

It contains more debugging and has the new filter stuff.

Let me know how it goes.

Rhino,
Maybe you could get last.fm to use this plug-in on their downloads page here:
http://www.last.fm/tools/downloads/

Is it time?

Thanks,

Filter isn't working, no idea why:

Quote

16/10/2006 21:02:01.125 (       24) > Issuing the following filter: filename="D:_Music_Junior Boys_So This Is Goodbye_Junior Boys - So This Is Goodbye - 01 - Double Shadow.mp3" Filetype=mp3,wav,ogg,flac,ape,mpc,wma,wv

16/10/2006 20:59:46.046 (       22) > AS thread started
16/10/2006 20:59:46.000 (       21) > AS thread starting

I haven't touched the filter, this is the default one.

edit: does it simply have to do with \ being replaced by _ in the filename? Why is this happening?

Hi Jim,

We should wait till the plugin goes production which should be in the next week or so.   Once it hits that milestone I'll drop them an email.

Does anyone else see this behaviour?   Can you try it like in my example, i.e. put a file in your c:\ directory, add it to MC and then try to play/submit it.

For what it's worth, I've had no trouble whatsoever with this plugin, either with MC11 or MC12. Works consistently well for me. Thanks for that.

I am also having a problem submitting tracks after installing the new dll file. I tried putting a music file on the root of the C: drive, as suggested. Still didn't work. I think the backslashes being converted to underscores in the submitting filenames could be the issue.

Here's my logfile:

I have asked J River to comment on this however in the meantime I am putting in the filename myself.

Download the new .DLL from the link above and try it.

Also note that I screwed up the default filter for filetypes.   It should be:

Filetype=[mp3],[wav],[ogg],[flac],[ape],[mpc],[wma],[wv]

So please change this in your filter settings as the new ones will not overwrite your current ones.

Hi Folks,

FYI JR have confirmed that the underscore is an issue in MC which they will resolve.   When the fix is released I'll change the code back to Filename="[FILENAME]".

it's getting even stranger for me (I'm using the older .dll). I listened to music all evening and only the first song was submitted. No trace of anything else I've listened to in the log:

The queue is empty and I didn't get any error message at any point.

Yes. It's happened only once since then and I don't think it's a problem with your plug-in: for some reason, a song would start playing and MC would keep displaying "Buffering...". The track time never appeared. I'm not sure whether or not the playcount was modified afterwards. But I guess it's related to the fact that nothing appears in your plugin's log.

All of my tracks by the band X will send a blank album field to last.fm.  These files are flac and mp3.

I've changed a few other files to single character artist names, (Sloan to S, for example) and these files submit the album field properly.

Here is a chunk of my log file for said tracks.

Have you overriden the Album field?   By default it's set to [ALBUM] and all the plugin does is call MC's GetFilledTemplate passing in that value, taking the result and adding it into the URL string.

If you haven't try changing it to some other fixed value to see if it gets inserted, e.g. XXXXXXX.

Mind you by the fact that you mention that it's only band X imples that others are OK?   If so then I doubt it's a plugin problem are more likely a MC/file issue.   What does the raw ID3 field tags show in MC for the .mp3 files?   Is the band name there?

I haven't overidden the album field.

I changed the artist name to a different value, "xxxxxxx", and that was submitted.

the previous artist name was a lowercase x. I changed to an uppercase X, which submits just fine.

Also, how do I show the raw ID3 field tags?

Select a file then go to the tag window.  There's an option on there to see all the ID3 tags.
