« Reply #50 on: October 28, 2006, 06:46:06 am »

I have installed this plugin at home. If I set this up at work (which uses the same MC library on a usb drive), will it cause problems having the plugin installed in 2 places but referencing the same library, user account etc?

If so, would it be possible in future versions to allow the plugin to have a definable path for those files which are currently placed in the [user]\Docs and settings.... folder.

Thanks for the plugin. It is easy to set up and use.

Hi,

It won't have a problem however each machine will have it's own submission queue.   I'll consider allowing you to change the directories after this version has been released.

OK folks ... it's been a few days since the last release and no-one has mentioned any problems.   Can I put this one to bed and release it as v1?

When I go to download, I always get the same filename.
I haven't installed anything in weeks.

It sounds like either a) your local internet cache is kicking in or your ISP is running a transparent cache.

Could be, but I use ReGet for D/Ls, and it doesn't cache AFAIK.

The beta sounds done now, but maybe a filename with the version would be better than each release being as_beta.zip

I'm easily confused you know.

That said, 1.0.0.3 has worked like a charm here even through regular bouts of lousy Internet connectivity.

WLM What I'm Listening To would be a great finish.

I'm running MC 11.1.200, and just downloaded last.fm today. Works fine with Windows Media Player.
I'm unable to get the MC plugin to work; I've tried everything but the new DLL you mentioned.

Apologies if I'm missing something obivous.

The plug-in from the last.fm site should not be used.  There is a link at the beginning of this thread that should work.  Rhinobanga is the author and the expert you can rely on.

Hmm. I uninstalled last.fm entirely, re-loaded the plugin from the top of the thread, and reloaded last.fm, pointing to the plugin. Still no dice...

I just installed MC 12.0.116 and this plugin appears to have stopped working.  The plugin is active and I can view my settings but nothing is being submitted to LastFM.  It appears LastFM is up and operating Ok so I'm not sure what the issue is.  Any ideas?

Edit: I'm stupid.

But you probably knew that already.

I don't know what happened...perhaps it was a Last.fm issue because it's suddenly working again.  I don't know though because the plug-in's log didn't show any activity until just now.  Odd.

Okay, I must be overlooking something. I have the October 11 version of the plug-in installed. I haven't changed the filetype filters (*.mp3,*.wav,*.ogg,*.flac,*.ape,*.mpc,*.wma,*.wv), and I've tried leaving the Advanced Filter box blank, or just putting 'filename=[FILENAME]' in it, because I want the plug-in to always submit all songs that I ever play on Media Center. It hasn't submitted anything. The Queue file is empty, and the FailedLog file doesn't exist. My last.fm accountname and password are correct.

I don't have the last.fm plug-in installed anymore, and I don't have PlayingNow installed (and the version I had before didn't have Audioscrobbler support).

Is there anything else I'm supposed to do to get this plug-in to submit all the songs I play?

Here is what the StatusLog looks like. I'm going to install that extra debug version of the DLL you mentioned...

So I tried it with the new version of int_AudioScrobbler.dll that has the simpler UI, and this is what the log says. Still nothing in the Queue file and no error log being created. I am playing MP3s, which are specified in the plug-in's filetypes listing. NOTE: Does it matter that I'm running Media Center 11.1.200?

Hi,

From what it is saying there nothing is being picked up on the local queue.  Using v11.1 shouldn't make a difference however since they can co-exist can u install it to see if it works.

If it still doesn't I'll create another version which will display MessageBox's at every stage of the scanning process.   It will mean though that you will have to hit return a *lot* of times.

I would add *.m4a to the list of extensions that this picks up.

Also, there's a pretty good list here: http://people.csail.mit.edu/tbuehler/video/extensions.html

And perhaps something a bit more comprehensive: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_file_formats#Sound_and_music

Yeah, there you go...  Add every extension in the world by default, so when you play Girls Gone Wild 3.avi, it gets submitted.  :)  Or just add *.*!

Well, you wouldn't want that! I wasn't actually suggesting to add all of the extensions, just some of the audio ones (like *.ra maybe?)

Hi there,

might be already said, but I just discovered the plugin and am using it against the latest (always...) MC 12 beta (on the writing of this it is .123).

Am I wrong to assume that "Reattempt failed submission" should also cause resubmitting for those that would not get submitted due to a server overload in last.fm?
Should these then be listed in the queue.txt?
If so, then this does not work - there is always only one try...

The list of submitted items in the services & plugins\last.fm section of MC's UI will by design only show items of the current MC session?
I think it would be nice to have a persistent list of the current session + all those that had not been submitted successfully so that one could retry submitting manually?

Thanks for not bashing  8)

If the last.fm site tells the plugin that a track did not get submitted *and you have told the plugin to reattempt failed submission in Options/Main* then it will be added to the queue again for later processing.   This in turn will show up in queue.txt.

Now, it is quite feasible that in the case of a server overload that the last.fm site itself logs any submissions for later processing and reports "success" to the plugin.

Correct.

The whole idea is a "fire-and-forget" concept in that the plugin will keep trying to submit failed tracks over multiple MC sessions until the end of time or it gets successfully submitted (whichever is sooner).   So I think having a screen like you suggest is not required since you will see the status of any tracks being submitted, even if it was a track from 12 days ago.

Then the status reply of last.fm is indeed a little bit confusing, because it might cause one to think, that the submission itself did not succeed due to a timeout... :-\

Thanks for the answers.

I do not wish to have podcasts submitted.
I used -genre=podcasts in Advanced Filter
This is what I see in the log:
14/12/2006 11:57:59.699 (      154) > Qualified files: 4347
14/12/2006 11:57:59.683 (      153) > Issuing the following search criteria:

Doesn't look like it used any search criteria.

So, what needs done to prevent pocasts from being submitted while allowing all other audio?

Are you sure you're using the latest version from this thread?   According to the code the logfile should say "Issuing the following filter:".

Is there any chance with the plug-in working when you sync a handheld? I listen to my iPod in the car more than I play music at home so it would be great if the plug-in picked up played tracks when I sync.

TIA

I would also like to mention that having this plugin work with an ipod sync would be very useful.

I know you have recently received an ipod so you are probably already working on this.

As the Playing Now plugin stopped to work a few weeks ago, I downloaded the plugin from this thread and the newer dll. But I seem to have some problems with the filter. This is an excerpt from the log:

28/12/2006 20:07:34.703 (      528) > File did not qualify (0) therefore it's not being submitted!

28/12/2006 18:43:23.156 (      514) > File did not qualify (0) therefore it's not being submitted!

Apparently no files from a path that contains an underscore qualify? (This might be the same bug as reported above, but I'm not sure). But why is the first entry filtered out? I see no reason for this. Some other files were submitted though, so in principle the plugin seems to work.
The filter options dialog contains this: Filetype=[mp3],[wav],[ogg],[flac],[ape],[mpc],[wma],[wv],[m4a]

I really don't get it. Why is one of these tracks filtered out by the plugin, and the other isn't? Both tracks are from the same album and have the same ID tags. Both paths contain spaces and whatnot. Where's the difference? It's really frustrating to see that most of the music I play is not submitted to last.fm.  :-[

IIRC there was an issue in an old version of MC12 which returned filenames with underscores.   What version of MC are you using?

Also try changing your filter and remove the "and Filetype=...".

If tracks are still not being qualified with just the "filename=..." statement try entering the filter in the main MC search box.

If they are still not being qualified then it's an MC issue and I will ask J River to shed some light on it.

What version of MC are you using?

11.1.200

I think I finally understand what happened. It is not the path, but the fact that the files in question were not in my library (yet). I think this behaviour is no good for me, since I often play tracks that are not in the library (yet) and my library is often not up-to-date.

Am I right in assuming that this could be solved if the "filename" filter would not be added automatically? But as this seems currently to be hardcoded, I can't remove it. I'd still like to be able to filter by file extension though.

The filename component cannot be removed as that is the "primary key", i.e. it is used to find the track in question in MC.   The following components of the filter are then used to determine if the track should be submitted.

I would have thought that MC would have temporarily added non-database tracks which would them be searchable.

Maybe try MC 12 (which can co-exist with v11) to see if that limitation has been addressed.

I just installed MC12 to test this issue, and the problem remains. Tracks not in the library are filtered out. What I don't understand is, how did you do it with the PlaingNow plugin that I used before? AFAIK, that plugin submitted all files, whether they were in the library or not.

Before I was doing my own (i.e. within the plugin) limited filtering on file extension only.   Now I am utilizing the full expression parser of MC however as you have found out this relies on MC "knowing" about the track.

I will ask J River to comment on this.

That was absolutely fine by me. Could the rest not be made optional?

Btw., I think it was mentioned before, the "Reattempt failed submissions" option is not sticky, i.e. it does not stay checked on MC restart. I think it should be sticky?

I am not going to duplicate what MC already provides.   I'll ask Matt to look into this issue.

I might have found a problem:

Code: [Select]
20/01/2007 10:46:21.625 (     1774) > File did not qualify (0) therefore it's not being submitted!
20/01/2007 10:46:21.562 (     1773) > Issuing the following filter: filename="Z:\temp\Music\Godspeed You! Black Emperor\f?a?8\Godspeed You! Black Emperor - f?a?8 - 01 - The Dead Flag Blues (Intro).mp3" and Filetype=[mp3],[wav],[ogg],[flac],[ape],[mpc],[wma],[wv] -Genre=[podcast]
20/01/2007 10:40:55.656 (     1772) > Waiting for something to do ...

It might be a problem with how MC handles the "#" character in the [Filename] field though. The actual filename is:

Code: [Select]
Z:\temp\Music\Godspeed You! Black Emperor\f#a#∞\Godspeed You! Black Emperor - f#a#∞ - 01 - The Dead Flag Blues (Intro).mp3
This is at least how it appears in the [Filename] field. If you copy and paste from that field however, what you see is not what you get:

Code: [Select]
Z:\temp\Music\Godspeed You! Black Emperor\f?a?∞\Godspeed You! Black Emperor - f?a?∞ - 01 - The Dead Flag Blues (Intro).mp3

All tracks submissions by the plugin with foreign language are discarded by Last.fm as "badly tagged." It began to happen when I switched from the other, official plugin by Last.fm.

Sorry Rhino, but his program is not working very well for me at the moment, probably about only 10% of what I play gets through, sometimes nothing.

Here is a log file, only "Hovering the volodrome"  got through and was listed in the lastfm panel in MC 12.

sorry Rhino, here is a log file.  No files were submitted on the plugin
page within MC, nor on the website, even though I played these
files from Album Leaf and Mum.

Your last.fm username seems odd ... according to the logfile it's "<user name>" without the quotes.   Is that correct?

Rhino I just did replace of my username in notepad, since I do not wish all my details
in a log file to go on a forum.

Fair enough.

Can you try this please.   Delete the logfile then submit a couple of tracks then email the complete logfile to jamie at jdnet dot co dot uk.   From what I am seeing the data is being submitted fine but I want to double-check.

Hi - is there any development going on with the plugin?

I am using the Beta 4 with MC 12 and there is still a lot of issues with the plugin freezing MC when the Queue has become a little bit bigger...

Additionally, is there any plans to use MCs proxy settings for submission. The plugin will not work if a proxy has to be configured for internet access - at least I have no clue on how to achieve this.

Is it still planned, that the plugin become an official part of MC?

Thanks, Marcus

The code has been frozen and submitted to JRiver as part of MC12.   Once it's released then work will continue on it.

As far as freezing MC is concerned I'm really surprised since it runs in a separate thread and uses the standard MC API for access.   One way I think it could do something like you suggest is if a deadlock condition occurred, in which case MC needs to add some more thread protection.   Another situation I have seen where threads "hang" is due to Windows single threading DNS calls.   Can you repeat this freezing?

That's not really a helpful post is it?   There are loads of people who are successfully using the plugin.   If you have problems report them and I'll look into it.

Can you repeat this freezing?

1) Occurs both on XP and Vista
2) It seems that it occurs if one switches sometimes to the Plugin View to look what has been submitted
3) and/or the queue to be processed is quite huge (I had one with about 90 entries)
4) The exact symptom is a message saying sth. about a background thread not finishing (will try to reproduce for the exact msg., but have no time at the moment)
5) This message may also occur if the queue is not entirely cleared / worked through when exiting MC.
6) After this the queue is in the same state as it was when the plugin started, no matter what files were added or submitted.

Can the plugin handle login/passwords that include extended ascii chars? I'm getting "Response: BADAUTH", though I'm sure the l/p I've entered are correct. My password contains an "æ" though, and I'm guessing that this is the issue. Perhaps the conversion to the scrambled/encrypted password in the .ini is where the problem occurs, or later when the scrambled pass in the .ini is de-scrambled/decrypted back to the original pass.

Whatever the case, I can't log onto the servers due to bad authentication.
