File Associations\Watch Folder enhancement
« on: October 23, 2006, 03:42:54 pm »

Might I make the following, relatively simple, suggestion for both the File Associations options box, and the Auto Import Add Folder dialog box?

It's clearly a rather hastily thrown together mock-up, but I think it conveys the idea adequately. This way you could easily tell MC to associate itself with all audio and video formats, but only some image formats, and to leave documents alone, for instance. Or set up an Auto Import folder of music and very easily tell MC to only import audio formats from that folder, without having to hunt through the entire list and determine which are audio or video, etc. It would work similar to a lot of installers. Check means all of that type's children, clear means clear them all, and the box means some of the children have been selected, but not all.

I couldn't agree more.  I keep trying to use OTTO but end up turning it off because I tire of deleting cover art that gets imported.

Shelly,

Could you give more details on this?  I haven't started using otto yet, so I'm interested in whether or not this will effect me.  I'm not clear on what it is that you're describing.

Thanks,

Larry

If it's importing cover art, then you've got something misconfigured.

A. You can specify which filetypes it should import per folder that you have it configured to watch. So if you have an Audio folder that has cover art in it, then just tell MC to only import Audio filetypes from that folder. What I'm proposing above is meant only to make what's currently already possible a little easier to do.

B. If you're using the fairly standard folder.jpg method of storing cover art, then you can click the box that tells MC to ignore special files. It should skip files named folder.jpg then.

I like that better too. Makes it easier than sifting through all the different file types. Got my vote. Not that it's worth too much ;D

I'd still like to see this changed.  It'd make configuring folders SO much more simple.  It'd be nice if the same control-scheme were also used for the Options --> File Associations config as well.

while we're on the subject of dialog boxes - long time pet peeve is the folder select dialog - its soo crude and basic - makes navigating to folders with it quite hard work.

This is how i'd LOVE to see it:

Change the text box at the top to a drop down list and make it automatically show previously used addresses so we can get between addresses alot faster - right now once you go to a new address the last one is a full navigation mission away.

The other way to do it is to use the little 'favourites' buttons so that if you click on the star it will show a list of all your fav addresses to quickly jump to one. The star with the + sign (VERY quick ugly mock up) would allow you to save any address you want as a fav. for quickly jumping to in future.

Either way would be a nice improvement :)
