Have MC12 (or 13) Trial Period Start When First Run?
« on: October 24, 2006, 12:48:18 am »

I'd like to be able to give MC some free advertising!

I do a bit of tech support for people in my local area.  I'd guess that's probably true of at least a fair number of us here (if nothing else but for our families).

I find I do a fair number of nuke-n-paves (wipe and re-start from scratch).  I always like to make sure to install some of my favorite, non-evil applications for the people I'm helping out, including media players, web browsers, and whatnot.

I usually hook people up with CCCP and Media Player Classic, Firefox with Adblock Plus and Filterset.G updaters enabled, TightVNC for easy remote tech support, ZipGenius, and a few other utilities that I use regularly.

Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to, I can't pre-install MC for them (at least I don't think I can) because as soon as I install it, their 30 days would start ticking.  (Am I wrong on this?)  It might not be a terrible idea to have MC switch to start the counter when it is first launched!  That way I (and probably others here too) could give it cred where cred is due.  I honestly think some of my clients would end up hooked if they took the 30 days.  It might take them a while to check it out though, and if they find they only have 3 days left it'll probably leave a bad taste.

Certainly wouldn't be a terrible idea for marketing MC as a "free trial" product anyway!

I'm sorry, but licensing can't be changed at this time.  Thanks for sharing MC.

In regards to topic, "Have MC12 (or 13) Trial Period Start When First Run?" Glynor, when I was building lots of systems as a moonlighting business, I included a shortcut on the desktop "Try Media Jukebox!" that linked to the download for Media Jukebox, with a popup description stating some of it's best features and to give it a try once they get their music files loaded on their computer. This way they always got the most recent version too. I think about 7-15 or so ended up purchased at least a single copy, and I know 4-5 that still are using Media Center 10 or 11. Several ended up going WMP as it evolved, as they didn't need the higher end that Media Center now provides. FWIW.
