Not a strange search behavior
« on: October 26, 2006, 02:25:41 pm »

When I search for any songs or artists in my library I get a very strange result!

Here are some examples:

Search for "hello" gives me this:
http://kirkegata.com/div/search1.jpg
Don't comment the Amy Diamond album please.....

I search for "bad to the bon" gives this sick result:
http://kirkegata.com/div/search2.jpg

NOTHING produced by Katie Melua or Cristina Aguilera have ever contained this search string:
http://kirkegata.com/div/search3.jpg

The list goes on.... I just can't see the logic in this.
I was going to buy MC 12. But not if the search function works like this...

Unqualified searches search in most fields and anywhere in the field. (so "on" finds "Bon Jovi")

To qualify a search, try the search wizard (caret at left of the box).  Or learn the keywords like [Artist]=bon or ar=bon.  Or use brackets so it doesn't search inside a string. (i.e. [bon jovi])

The help file has lots more information about this.

Matt beat me to it. perhaps these will help you understand a bit better, also, this is how v11.1 worked too, so I don't fully understand the extent of aggravation conveyed in your post.

katie melua contains an 'i', her album contains 'search', so why is it wrong that it should be listed by your search?
perhaps if you had wrapped the strings in quotes your results would improve?

i would expect bad to the bon to return all bon jovi tracks, as well as any album that contained the word 'bonus'
again, wrap in quotes.

as for the hello search, I'd say you are getting positives from fields that are not visible in your scheme. I'm not able to rattle off a comprehensive list at this time, but, certain library fields are flagged as "default search" items. This means that all of those flagged fields are searched when you don't specify a field in the search box.

ie: ar=bon would search for artists that contained bon, but if you just type bon, all the 'default search' fields are parsed for bon

better now?

Ok. Ok. I think I understand how it works now. It was reasonably close to what i feared.
Was not my intention to be agressive. I'm just a bit frustrated   :)

I tried to find places to configure what the default search fields are, but with no luck.
Personally I think it's a bit nuts that you can search in almost every field...
Anyway; there should be options to modify the behavior. Are there really none?

The most logical to me would be to search with AND function, not OR. The fact that it search the whole string so you can get parts of words matching is a good thing.

Search for: "good santa" should return title "goodguy santaclaus" but NOT "goodboys on the corner" and "santa brings the christmas to you" etc, etc....
Again, this is MY personal thoughts.

I'll try to read some more in the help. Didnt find anything about this when I looked yesterday. Sorry.

I'll pay 150$ for this application if you give me my own build with this search defaults  ;D

Are you sure?  Searching for bon I get loads of tracks, but for bon jovi I only get Bon Jovi.

Search Defaults can be changed in Options -> Library and Folders -> Standard / User Library Fields - Edit Field

By default it is AND, but it is not limited to complete words.

For example, the plain  santa coming  search expression returns only the following tracks from my library:

Bjorn Again - Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
Diana Krall - Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
Lena Horne - Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
Santana - Look Up (To See What's Coming Down)
Santana - Everything's Coming Our Way

The search expression  santa OR coming  returns 214 tracks that contain the string santa or the string coming.

this is fun huh? :)

default is indeed AND.

If I search for bon I get a shedload...

if I search for bad bon I get:

Name   Artist   Album
Need Your Love So Bad - Bonnie Tyler - Heart and Soul
You Give Love A Bad Name - Bon Jovi - One Wild Night Live 1985-2001
Bad Medicine - Bon Jovi   - One Wild Night Live 1985-2001
Bad Medicine - Bruce Springsteen & Jon Bon Jovi   - Red Bank Rockers
Bad Times Come Easy - Bruce Springsteen & Jon Bon Jovi   - Red Bank Rockers
You Give Love A Bad Name - Bruce Springsteen & Jon Bon Jovi - Red Bank Rockers
Badlands - Bruce Springsteen & Jon Bon Jovi - Red Bank Rockers
Bad To The Bone   - George Thorogood & The Destroyers - The Best Air Guitar Album In The World...Ever! III

I think the bonnie tyler result probably illustrates the behaviour best.

Think you'll have to spread the $150 dollers between Marko and Alex  :)

Hehe. Almost :) But I'm still missing the possiblility to select wich field that are searchable.
For all I know it might be there. Just that I havent found it.....
Are lyrics a default search field btw? That might explain some of my results.

Crap. I have to investigate more when I get home to my media center.
For now it's work, work, work....

Please see my initial response.  You can use the wizard or prefixes to pick what you search for.  The help file has more information.

I don't mind it so much, but I think he is refering to by default, to only have certain fields searchable.  i.e exclude reviews, bios, and liyrics, (for me) but include name, artist, and album in the defualt search.

Exactly. I don't really want to do hundred steps to search for a title. I'm planing to use a PDA with qwerty touch keybord. Not the best for mouse control. I guess there are options to automate it a bit. But still, there SHOULD be options to change default behavior.

I've done some more tests now. I finally found the WHY.
The search include the COMMENT field. Thats why whole albums show up.
Pretty please say there are ways to disable comment and lyrics from the search!
I really don't belive it's normal for ppl to search those things

There is. eba already explained where you can find the library field options:

Search Defaults can be changed in Options -> Library and Folders -> Standard / User Library Fields - Edit Field

BTW, Lyrics is not one of the default search fields.

the current 'default' default search fields:

[album]
[artist]
[band]
[bitrate]
[caption]
[comment]
[disc #]
[events]
[file type]
[filename]
[genre]
[keywords]
[media sub type]
[media type]
[name]
[people]
[places]
[rating]
[track #]

[lyrics] is not a default search field, [comment] is.
To change that, as has been mentioned twice already, go to:

tools > options > library and folders > standard library fields...

find comment in the list, click on it, then click on 'edit'. Take the tick out of "default search field" and them OK your way back to MC.
