The Auto-Import function is a great idea. 

Is there a "monitoring service" that is always running or does Auto-Import only run when Media Center is running?

Does it make a difference if the Media Server is running? 

How does any of this relate to the "Run auto-import in background" option?

I'm surprised how well it picks up new files.  I run MC on my 24/7 server as a library server for my laptop on the internet and upnp server for MP101 music players.  It works so well.  I rip CDs on my desktop and the server copy picks the files up before I even can get to it!

I really like to, then, add a Date Imported field and sort by that.  I can then find all the new songs I just added on the server edition.

OK...  But what if I don't want MC running all the time?  Does the Media Server monitor changes in the "Auto-Import" directories or is there another agent that keeps track of changes until MC is run?

And it seems quite quick too. Last night I had my 'recently imported' view open in MC. I moved some of those files from one folder to another and went to MC to see how quickly the changes were reflected there. It was amusing to see the path changes reflected just I looked at them, in the space of an alt-tab keystroke.

I just performed a little test and found that Auto-Import does not work on it's own (I.E. a background service) or via Media Server.

You MUST run Media Center to perform the Auto-Import.

Correct.  That is as designed.

MC reconciles the disk and the database on startup, and again anytime a change is detected in a watched folder.

Reconciliation happens in the background and usually takes a second or two.  No real resources are required to watch for changes.

And many of us agree wholeheartedly.  Besides, since Otto (the Auto-Import function) is so quick on startup, why would you ever need it to run when MC's interface isn't loaded?

This is the right philosophy.  The over reaching programs that do not follow this philosophy are my my list of programs to replace.

This ought to be law. I am so sick programs and developers that seem to think that the only reason I bought a PC was to run that one piece of software. Are you listening Sony? Norton?

I can't run a standard build of a PC.  I always must reinstall XP alone and then the software I want.  Next, I spend a few minutes disabling all the auto started junk which is still a fraction of a Dell, Sony, whatever PC.

By saying that it is bad philosophy....you were basically saying exactly what every computer intermediate and above directly wants.  I just feel like it's an infomercial.  Every portion of that sentence works perfectly for your audience.
