Exception in JRTools.dll (shell integration)
« on: January 10, 2007, 03:52:06 am »

I upgraded from MC11 to MC12 beta (was on 130 now 139). I'm pretty sure it left the old MC11 installation so I have them side-by-side now.

Since install I cannot right click on any Windows drive without getting the "An error has occurred". When I debug (in VS2003) I can see from the call stack that the exception is in JRTools.dll.

Any ideas? Not ideal obviously...

Thanks, Alfie.

I uninstalled MC11 including tickbox to remove reg entries and all is fine again now...

Correction, just stopped and restarted MC12 and problem is back. For info MC12 was running when I uninstalled MC11.

And (as I expected) disabling shell integration in MC12 fixed it again. Enable it and problem comes back.

Cheers, Alfie.

Uh oh.  Looks like this isn't entirely fixed.  I'm not surprised actually ... I had disabled the Shell Integration on most of my machines because I continue to have trouble.

Juggler -- Try this:

1. Make sure MC is NOT running.
2. Find and rename C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 12\JRShellExt.dll to JRShellExt.bak (or something else).
3. Reinstall the current build of MC12.
4. Re-enable Shell Extensions and see if the problem returns.

Developers -

I just checked my machine here at work, where I had installed and had issues with the first builds that showed the JRShellExt issues.  I had build 12.0.144 installed currently.  I checked the JRShellExt.dll file and it was:

Version: 1.0.23.0
Created: 12/21/2006
Size: 368,640 bytes

I did the process I described just above and installed 145.  Now the file is:

Version: 1.0.23.0
Created: today
Size: 364,544 bytes

So, it's reporting the same version, but is obviously different.  It STILL won't let me delete the old file (now named JRShellExt.bak) -- gives me an access denied.  Right click menus in Explorer seem to work okay (speedy and all that).  Shell extensions ARE enabled on this machine.  I would say that I noticed on some of my home machines that having shell extensions enabled negatively impacted the time taken for windows to display the right-click context menu, even with builds available this past weekend.

I just checked on my install and version is the same but file size is 327,680 bytes which doesn't correspond to either of yours.

Rebooting allowed me to delete the BAK file.

Interesting. My 1.0.23.0 version is 364,544 bytes.

So is mine.  I originally mistyped the numbers...
