Hi there - I have a lot of DVDs transferred to hard disk storage, and want to play them within MC12.

MC12 catalogs the VIDEO_TS.IFO files and plays them perfectly, with subtitles, etc.

However, I want to rename the movie title based on the folder the file is in. For example, if the path is:

DVDS/Blue Velvet/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO

I want the DVD to show up in MC12 as Blue Velvet, not as VIDEO_TS.IFO

Is there anyway to automate this process?

Short answer: No, not automate the process. But it can be done, kind of..

Everytime I see one of these posts, I really wonder...

What motivates you to keep the DVD in VIDEO_TS format as opposed to extracting the individual title track(s) and using those in MC?  Is it a desire to retain the DVD Menu?

Personally... I prefer to manage them all via MC's interface and get rid of the DVD Menus.  They're flashy, but really using MCs streamlined interface is much quicker and simpler to get to the specific media I want.

Subtitles and alternative audio tracks. I have about 6TB storage for media, so size is not a problem...

Incidentally, the file properties from filename worked perfectly. Now I need to get the aspect ratio thing sorted out.

But modern container formats can contain as many sub and audio tracks as you want...

(BTW - I'm not complaining.  I'm just confused by the frequency with which people seem to want to manage video via ISO and IFO files, which are ungainly and not really designed for media usage on PCs.)

I hear ya...

Have you found a straightforward DVD ripper that will encode to any of these container formats? I have found MKV to be quite difficult to set up for reliable playback.

AutoMKV works quite well and is very straightforward to use.  Basically it is AutoGK for MP4 and MKV.  It's major limitation is (in order to keep the UI simple) it is limited to a max of 2 audio tracks and 2 sub tracks.  However, if you happen to need them, additional audio and sub tracks can easily be muxed into existing MKV files using MKVToolnix.

AutoMKV: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=113811

MKVToolnix: http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/

EDIT: I should clarify.  AutoMKV is generally an encoder, not a ripper.  It actually can act as an all-in-one ripper solution using an external ripping application though.  I've never tested this, as I use RipIt4Me + DVDDecrypter separately myself.

A related question: how do you catalog real DVDs in MC? I have a large collection of DVD discs that isn’t stored on hard drive because of its size. Still I would like to have an entry for each DVD disc in MC with some information about a corresponding movie, name, artists, plot, cover image etc. I understand that this could be achieved by making and importing into MC an image or a short video for each DVD – in my case it would be a major undertaking. Is there an automatic or semi-automatic way to do it?

.../Blue Velvet/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO

I want the DVD to show up in MC12 as Blue Velvet, not as VIDEO_TS.IFO

Fill Properties From Filename...

Directories:
untick

Filename:
[Name]\[any unused field 1]\[any unused field 2]

If preferred, you can remove the redundant "VIDEO_TS" values afterwards.

For an offline catalog I have used DVD Profiler for years. For having similar catalog features JRiver would need to build everything from scratch and they still would not have a DVD database to start with.

Many thanks, Alex! I’ll certainly look closer into DVD Profiler.

My need for cataloging DVDs is twofold. First, most of my DVDs are recordings from TV (legal in my country). The recordings are now so many that I have difficult to keep track of which movies do I have and which not. In addition, the recordings are in various stages of processing. First they are on my DVB recorder. Then I move some to a PC for processing. After processing I burn on DVD. For this purpose I could use a simple catalog in Excel or Access.

However, I’m thinking of using MC in Theatre View in my living room so it would be nice to be able to browse though a catalog in MC, with pictures, stars, plots, and even a short preview when selecting a movie for viewing. Such a catalog would then give me disc number of the disc to be inserted. In this environment I’m looking for a comfortable TV UI (not computer UI) which I hope MC TV will become.
