The new feature list says: "Improved network sharing -- first user has r/w access, others have read/only"

If User A loads the library, then User B loads the library, presumably User A has R/W access, but User B has read only access.

But, two questions about how this works:

--If User A then closes MC, does user B then get R/W access?

--If User A closes MC, the User A reopens MC does user A keep or get back R/W access?

Good questions.

On a related note, it seems User B (to continue the example) gets a copy of the library rather than actually referencing the same one as  User A. Is this right? I'm guessing this because updates to the library made by User A are not reflected for User B until he restarts MC. I guess I had hoped that any update would be propagated to the other clients as they happen without a restart of MC.

The whole approach to the problem of sharing the database looks very anachronistic to me.
There are databases on the market for decades now, that control multiuser access.

I can't understand why a proprietary database is used in the application.

I believe a proprietary DB was used for speed reasons (probably others too). If you look at the time MS spent trying to have its Media Center deal with large libraries quickly you can see that this isn't a trivial issue.

I'd still like an answer to my original question, though.

I believe that the users get R/W or R/O access depending on the order in which they start up, and that a user closing a session has no effect on this.

I really appreciate this feature.  It doesn't need to be improved for me, either.  If I left a computer running with MC, I'll just connect via Logmein and close MC (and probably shut it down).
