"Real Audio" playback in MC.
« on: March 28, 2007, 08:16:02 pm »

Does MC natively support Real Audio files, or do we need to install something like "Real Alternative" to play these files in MC?  If third party software is needed, is there a generally accepted "best choice" for this?

Real Audio playback is working in the system that I'm currently on, but I honestly can't remember what was needed (if anything) to get it to work.  I'm curious about this so I can advise somebody else.

Thanks,

Larry

You need to install either RealPlayer or RealAuternative.

If you only install RealPlayer, you can only play it in RealPlayer engine, not in DirectShow engine. However, there are "Real Media Splitter" filters available that would allow you play them in DirectShow. The Real Media Splitter is just a wrapper around the actual Real player, so applications can play Real media in DirectShow. Therefore you still need to install RealPlayer.

If you install RealAlternative, you do not need to install RealPlayer.

Thanks -- that's the information I was looking for.

On this subject, what sites do you guys recommend (if any) for downloading things like "Real Alternative"?  I see lots of sites hosting this file, but I have no idea if some sites are more "trustworthy" or up-to-date than others.

Thanks again,

Larry

Larry,

I can't recommend a site, but be aware that a new version was released today. Real Alternative 1.52.  So the first test of the site is do they have this version.

Best bet is to just google it and take the first result.  If you get infected with spyware up the ying yang, make haste and tell us so we can avoid it.

Thats generally where I go for RealAlternative and QuicktimeAlternative.  Their site isn't too bad.

I would definitely recommend RealAlternative strongly over the "real" Real.  Quicktime has never seemed that obnoxious to me (others disagree), but Real's end-user stuff is just junk.

Again,

my computer does not have to be healthier than i am. when it goes into a public place it may catch a cold. just make sure its immune system is up to date.
