Need Tips For Organising Videos
« on: April 15, 2007, 11:58:46 am »

I have TV recordings of 24, Prison Break and all Twilight Zones (now that's OLD) and some movies. I want to organise series on Name and Season and Movies on Title.

When I import these I get the impression that MC12 is almost treating them like its audio, more or less the same tags with only a few minor differences. With album/artist tags named after a date the filename its all pretty useless so I guess its up to me to create a View Scheme with the proper fields etc.

I would really like to know how others are doing this or would do this.

Forgive me for this little rant, but MC imports and organizes audio perfectly, but I feel videos and pictures are still lagging behind. Everything is possible but with a lot more manual work than with audio. It would be nice to see MC do this perfectly as well, for instance by picking up names, seasons and genres/categories from folder names. Drop the default fields used for audio and for pictures and videos use proper field names by default. Maybe its time for an import wizard? A few questions on how the user has it organised and what is named after what?

Cheers!
Ingemar.

I do this quite alot for TV series stuff, but not movies as yet.
I've created some custom fields
*Episode
*Series  (Same as Season)
*Programme (LOST/Skins/Dr Who/Sharpe/BattleStar...)
*Video Type (TV-Series/Home Video/Movies)

For all TV-Series type programmes I set video type to 'TV Series'.
I don't really use MC for much else with Video, but theoretically I could.

I've created a view specifically for TV-Series type stuff.  At the moment:
It allows me first to select which programme I'm interested in:

Then select which series:

Then select which episode:

(Image shack keeps shrinking some of my images for some reason, despite i've told it not to..)

Overall I've been finding this works fairly well.
Someone else here did point out a flaw in the view system, where they could have done with the view
systems being dynamic based on the tags, which would be nice.  I can't remember the reason for it.

The most desirable feature I would like at present, is the tags being filled out based on where
I put the files automatically.  Although the tools exist to do it manually, it's getting hard
work to keep up with a growing library.

Thx Chris.

I've added fields for Series, Season and Episode. That works fine.

I've added a view scheme called TV Series with those same fields.

BUT, movies are shown there as well. I want to create a new view scheme for movies only but I'm not sure how to filter movies from Series and the other way around.

A lot of those fields you mentioned are built into MC by default now with MC12.  Not sure why you had to create custom fields.  [Media Sub Type] works very well for what Mr. Chriz mentioned he uses [Video Type], in fact, it even has "TV Show" as one of it's pre-defined list items.  Series, Episode, and Season are all now standard fields.

To filter out the inappropriate video types, you use Step 4 in the Edit View Scheme dialog.  You can simply define a filter that says:

[Media Type]=[Video] [Media Sub Type]=[TV Show] ~sort=[Series],[Season],[Episode],[Name]

Yeah when I said I added fields I meant existing fields added to a new view scheme.

I hadn't noticed Media Sub Type though. That's a good one to filter in the views that I want.

Thx guys.

Cool
I asked about Media Sub Type some time ago, it used to be readonly.
That's obviously chaned.  I'll move over to it!

I wish we could get some more options in autoimport.

Adding serie, season, episode, etc. based on foldernames and filenames would make it easier to update MC with the video and pictures part of my media.

But its not editable (as in can't add "Sport") for me? Is this different for anyone else? (12.0.207)

No, unfortunately you can't modify the list values, AFAIK.  Just happens that (so far) the existing list has been fine for me.  I use [Genre] for most of those types of things...

sauzee,
a very fast workaround: create your own field, e.g. MyMediaSubType
