DFX Artifacts

Noticed while using DFX plug-in there is a small blip of music when starting playback. Is this something DFX is retaining from previous playback sessions? MJ's effects does not do this, so I'm guessing it has to be the DFX plug-in causing the noise.

It wouldn't be so bad, except on a burned cd using disk writer it is very noticable during the crossfade. Thoughts??

ADDITIONAL : Should point out that I'm using MJ's effects at the same time. Basically this is what is being done...

Using EQ, adjusted as I see fit.

MJ's Effects, Evironment -None, Virtual Subwoofer - 8", Surround Field - Insano Extreme

Replay Gain - All Tracks

DFX - Fidelity, Ambience, 3D - OFF, Dynamic Boost, Hyper Bass

I'm wondering if it is because of MJ's effect being used at the same time there is some sort memory \ buffering conflict going on???

If you're using JRiver's eq or DSP, you might turn them off.

Therein lies the problem. Alone, each sounds only so so. Start mixing and things really start to perk up. Try it yourself and see. This isn't much of a deal when listening on the computer. They all crossfade pretty well without any noticable difference. It's only when selecting something new from the library that the noise shows up. And, as mentioned before, when using Disk Writer in MJ.

So, I thought there may be a reason for the blips.

Yes

I don't see a need for it, MJ has DSP, EQ, Real Play Gain. The only thing that could be better is having the band in the same room with you.

Just for measure...

Install the DFX plug-in and use the effects as I have listed in the opening post. There is a HUGE difference in the way the music sounds.

Clarification on DFX setings :

Fidelity = 5

Ambience = 2

3D Surround = OFF

Dynamic Boost = 3

Hyper Bass = 6

Mike,
Are you playing through PC speakers?  Or an amp?

hi!
i also use both dfx and the mj dsp studio stuff at the same time, through a pair of halfway decent computer speakers, and agree that together they sound miles better than either do singly. i do find that on starting to, listen to a new playlist, it cuts out a few times, but once it settles down its o.k. i listen mostly to downloaded mp3s, most of them at 128bps, and the dfx plugin makes them sound miles better when used with all the mj dsp studio stuff turned on. if anyone expreesses an interest, i fiddled about with all the settings imaginable before i settled on what i use now, and as i am a proffessional musician who used to own thousands of pounds worth of hifi gear, i have pretty discerning ears when it comes to sound, so i will post all my settings if anyone requests me to, as a start point for people to fiddle about from. this might save some people from eartiring experimentation, as the number of variables to alter is huge with this setup. if interested, please post a message with a title like "dfx-what settings?" and i will do my best. thanks, and happy listening!

Mike,

Some players do not inform plug-ins when the playback of a different song is starting. Complex plug-ins like DFX that include room ambience modeling do not have a means to "flush out" the ambience in the room from the prior song when the playback of a new song occurs, hence, the occasional popping noise on song startup.

Closing the player and reopening it will usually eliminate the startup "pop." Also, turning off the ambience feature may be effective.  If you are copying songs onto a CD, you should try creating a playlist before recording.

Thanks,

Emailed DFX to see what they had to say about this. This is the reply.

Is there any way for MJ to do a work around on this? Just curious.

We may not be sending the Flush(...) command to Winamp 2 DSP plugins.

So please, please, please convince DFX to write an MJ DSP plugin.  It'll take them 10 minutes, offer perfect integration with MJ, and give them access to 32-bit audio data....

Matt,

Are you saying this DFX is based on winamp stuff? Geez, you'd think if they offered it for MJ they would right a plug-in solely for that.

OK, I'll try the sqqqqqueeeeeeeeeaaakkkkyyy wheel routine with them. Sometimes works for me here.

BTW Matt-Any compression headway yet?(insane)

Thanks -- if enough people bug them, hopefully they'll add native MJ support.

Email sent, no grease, lotsa squeak.

I suppose 9 is gonna be high priority for a while, huh? Had to ask about the other, because when I read what you had posted I stopped all APE rips until I see what this may offer. Disk space challenged may find this very useful.

I just emailed a very squeaky request for native MJ support.  I stopped using DFX, because to my ears,  the sound is of lower quality with it enabled.

I can't even hear and i could tell when i used it when i used MusicMatch a few years ago.

I always wondered why i spent the money on it. even more so with MJ you have the DSP, The EQ, and the New Real Play Gain what more do you need?

Patent answer, but it's accumulating:

Michael,

Most DFX for Media Jukebox users experience enhanced, problem-free
listening.  However, we are always working to improve DFX, and we have
passed your comments on to our development team.

dsp_dee,

Wow, this is great news. Looking forward to what you can come up with. I'm glad someone has the initiative to write a native DSP plug-in for MJ! Please keep us informed.
