MC12 stopped tagging files
« on: July 25, 2007, 11:54:16 am »

I ripped about 50 CDs before MC12 stopped putting tags in the files. The last 10 or 12 have no tags in them as verivied with musicIP and other tools.  I've read through the help sections and verified all of the options are enabled, I've reinstalled MC12, FAQs, etc. Nothing seems to help.  The help sections refer to a couple of settings under the options menu (update tags when files change, etc). I'm using FLAC encoding so the MP3 plugin settings don't seem to apply.

Have I missed something?

Thanks

I wonder what has changed if it worked previously. Did you use the same MC, FLAC encoder plugin and FLAC decoder plugin versions for all CDs? What are these versions?

Does the problem occur only when ripping? Can you add or change FLAC tags at all?

You can click the "Format" tag in Action Window > Tag for seeing an expanded format window that shows what physical file tags the decoder plugin can read from the file.

A nice program that can show what FLAC tags the files have is Mp3tag. Right-click a FLAC file in Mp3tag and select "Extended Tags..." for seeing all tags.

It was the same FLAC encoder. EnFLAC 2.2.2 for all the CDs I ripped.  Iwill check when I get home, but I haven't tried changing any tags from within MC12. I check with MusicIP and it shows the tags are non-existent and I can change them to something useful using it.

I will download mp3tag when I get home and try using that (but MusicIP works...).

Thanks for your help.

It gets curiouser and curiouser...

When I got home, I brought up MC12 to verify what it saw for tags. The CDs I ripped yesterday were NOT in the library! I looked on the disk, the files were there. Back to MC12, nothing.  I tried to import the folder and it wouldn't find any new songs (is the FLAC format supported for this operation? It isn't in the list of supported types for the folder import).

Anyway, I downloaded and started mp3tag. It found the files and there were no tags in the files! I brought up MusicIP and there were no tags in the files!

Back to the problem of dissapearing from MC12. I ripped a new CD, checked to see that the files existed. CHecked tags with MP3TAG, they are blank.  Switch MC12 from "recently ripped" to "audio" and look for new songs - NONE - then exited MC12. Restart MC12 and Look for the new songs - NOTHING!  What is happening here???

Make sure you have the latest FLAC plugin.

You might try APE or MP3 just to see if it's format specific, or if it's permissions or some other thing.

Purely for giggles, try going in the tree to the "documents" section.  I believe you'll find this right under the headers for audio, images, video.  Note:  "documents" only appears in the tree when you've imported documents--and I believe you'll find a whole passel of documents with the ".flac" extension.

If you do--and I've got a dollar riding on this--you need to delete them all from your library but NOT your disk.  You're going to re-import them, but only after enabling "flac" in audio file types.  Do this under tools/options/something/something else/etc etc.  I'm sorry, it is WAY too hot for me to look for this, but it's there.

Once you've enabled FLAC, you can re-import them and find them in audio, and tag them, and listen to them.

Well, you may be able to collect 1/2 of that dollar. I did find the CDs under documents and deleted them.  However, when I went to Tools->File associations  FLAC was not an option.  This is what I mentioned previously, it doesn't appear that MC12 can import FLAC files.

Thanks

Hmmm . . .

#1.  make sure you have the latest version, available at the top of the MC12 board.

#2.  Post your sys info, available under help/system info.

#3.  Just to be clear, there are two places you want to enable FLAC.  Under tools/options/file associations, just as you mentioned, and for auto-import, under tools/auto-import options/auto import folders/<any audio auto-import folders you have>.

#4.  I just checked my version, and FLAC is sitting there, pretty as could be.  If your version is missing FLAC, I'm confident it will be put back in there fairly quick.

What is your decoder version? Do you have it installed?

The encoder is used only for encoding (creating) new FLAC files. The decoder (In_FLAC.dll) is needed for importing, tagging and playing.

DL address: http://mcplugins.sourceforge.net/files.html

If you have problems with the Internet install you can download the zip package directly from the following page and use the Local_Install.mjp file for starting the install process (unzip the package first):

Interesting! I never knew there was a seperate import encoder.  Never tried it before now.

Adding InFlac 2.4.0 and FLAC is now an option under import->advanced and tools->options->files.

The 2 CDs I just ripped DO show up in documents and I deleted them. I then tried to import them with the newly installed InFlac and it took them and put them back in Documents.  Is that what was expected?

While I have no idea what caused the problem nor what fixed it, I am up and running again.  What I did was to uninstall MC12 and it's library files. Once that was done, I reinstalled both the InFlac and EnFlac plugins then import my music folders. This got all of my previously ripped CDs plus the 2 that were "in transition" back into the audio library.

Once that was done, I could edit the tags with an external program MusicIP or MP3TAG on the 2 CDs that were untagged.  Ripping new CDs resulted in tags being applied as I ripped them.

I'll let you know iof this problem crops up again.

Thanks for you help.
