Is there a way to take an audio file and examine it to see if it was ever encoded to MP3?  I have some live performances for various artists and would like to examine them to see if there was a lossy stage in their creation.

It is probably pretty obvious when examining the audio because mp3 encoding probably adds a distinct fingerprint that is retained even when converted back to WAV for audio cd burning.
