Has anyone else had any experience with the EEE?  It looked very intriguing so I started looking around to order one.  They are tough to find!  Newegg had the surf models in stock plus $10 shipping.  After placing my order, I remembered my long-time main online store, buy.com.  They had the better model (one I really wanted).  The newegg one I ordered was white because I have a white laptop now and like the non-black color.  Buy.com only had the black but it is worth the color to get the bigger battery, web cam, and whatever else is included extra.  Plus, they have free shipping so that saved me more than $10.  I canceled the NewEgg order but it was not "guaranteed" to be canceled quite yet.  I hope it gets canceled.

I figure it will be perfect for taking on trips as we have several coming up.  Since it only has 4GB of space, I'll have to be careful.  Many others were using an SD card for programs so I will consider doing that.  It appears to have been in stock when I ordered it but I'll have to wait and see.  It said very low stock.

They are selling out everywhere...in and out of stock at every store I'm checking on a daily basis.  The first order did not get canceled but will be here before the weekend (2nd one won't).  I'm going to accept it and use it.  Worst case I could sell it on eBay for probably the same amount I paid for it.

But unless you are 'in love' with the eEE, have a look at the refurb'd dual core laptop market.  You'll be really surprised at what you can get for $400-500.

And the new model of the Samsung Q1, the one with the really nice screen and great battery life, can easily be found for $700-

That's about twice the price.  I do like the handheld UMPCs because you can use them easily while walking (two handed).  I'll get my EEEs soon and see what I think.

I received the first one today, as expected.  The keyboard is in fact smaller than my 12" laptop (normal sized keyboard) which surprised me a bit.  It is definitely more difficult to type on but I can't judge it until I have used it for a little while.

I'm just installing/updating XP and software now but it seems very nice so far.

My biggest annoyance is a red stuck pixel centered vertically and slightly to the left of center horizontally.  Since it is a small/low resolution overall screen, it is very annoying.  It is only really visible when the screen is mostly black.  What would everyone else do?  I bought it from Newegg and they may exchange it.  I'm trying to decide if it's worth it.  I'm also thinking about selling it on eBay so I could get the better model (longer battery, camera, etc.) as this one was somewhat of a mistake purchase.  The dead pixel just further pushes me to replace it.  I have a hard time accepting LCDs with dead pixels.

Okay, I'm writing this on my Asus EEE right now.  It is definitely a bit of a challenge to get used to the keyboard but it is growing on me.  It, like the iPhone, just takes some practice before you can truly judge it.

It does get much warmer than I was expecting.  Also, I don't see the battery time estimate in XP so they must have forgot to add that feature into the driver for the battery circuitry.  I have installed XP and everything I use on a regular basis, including Media Center.  I must say that it runs very decent overall.  I just cannot believe how small the screen is yet I still get access to full applications--just a strange realization.  It's very neat, though, and I really like it.  I'm listening to music now, too.  Believe it or not, I still am stuck at wireless B...but I have a g box that I can hookup.  It was giving me some trouble so I reverted to B and it does about everything I need because I'm not a heavy wifi user.  However, I want to start streaming my DVDs to my EEE through MC and that will require G speeds.  I plan on hooking that up shortly.

This thing is so dang cool.  I'm actually surprised by the weight as I was used to a 4 pound twelve inch so two pounds isn't really a huge change.  My biggest complaint is that it is back heavy so it tends to tip over since the front is so light.  It really does seem like a toy but it is amazing that I was able to install everything I did on it.

I have two 1GB memory upgrades on the way for both the EEEs I ordered.  The 8GB model is in stock in certain areas but it seems like a poor value.  I got an 8GB card for fifty bucks or so and the memory for twenty.  So that's seventy and I'm getting 12 GB instead of 8.  But I do like single drives so it would be nice.  I'm trying to talk myself out of it so I don't think I have to buy it.

Overall I am very pleased with this unit.  Sound wise, I am slightly disappointed because the fan seems louder than it should be.  I was using this all day next to my big computer and just minutes ago I shut it down and carefully listened for sound to approach zero.  What is that noise??  Oh, its the fan!!  I can deal though because it will handle motion better with no moving parts.  Nice computer if you know what you're getting!

My eee plays DVDs ok with mc.  Wireless b was not fast enough to stream DVDs but it was very close. So I upgraded to wireless g.  They play ok except they skip and stutter--video only.  I'm sorry but I wish I would have tried vlc for a comparison but didn't. I'm using powerdvd.

VLC plays DVDs essentially perfectly without a single problem.  If only the VLC DVD codec could be used in MC.
