Anyone having troubles on DVD playback from USB drives in Vista?
« on: December 06, 2007, 03:52:28 pm »

Installed MC in Vista. Initially no videos played (not even avi or divx) unless I installed Cole2k codec packs. Now I'am bothering with DVD playback.
Simply MC states "Waiting" and nothing happens any more. Tried to switch through all Video Decoders but nothing helped.
Then I tried Windows Media Player which gave the message that DVD does not support my Region. Somehow stupid cause they are VOB files on harddisc region free.
I searched in the internet and found someone who recommended to install XP codes called DECCHECK. So after restart - oh wonder - the DVD playback was fine.
Next time restart the DVD playback failed again with "Waiting" ...
Then I wondered about the file MC is showing in "Playing Now": its ending is ..\video_ts.dvd
I clicked on "Locate on external" but MC could not find the file. This is happending with all my ripped DVDs - the message MC reports is "The file ... does not exist"

Now I'am curious If the "... does not exist" might be the troublemaker of my playback problem or if this is just another issue of Vista.

Any suggestions welcome, thx for help.

*.dvd is a virtual filename.  Don't worry that it can't be found on disk.

You might try EVR, VMR, etc. in DVD options to see if one works better.

Let us know what you find.

I already tried all settings through.
The thing I found is, that when I copy the dvd folder to a local hard disc they play perfectly. The problem exists only with my USB disc.
So for the moment I got a workaround and If I find something I let you know of course.

I just copied a ripped dvd to an iPod acting as a drive, and it played ok via USB. What kind of a setup do you have? Can you play it with windows media player? If not, it's possible the Microsoft DVD navigator filter is not allowing playback from that USB device.

You're right - it doesnt play with Microsoft either.
But I think I searched the whole google and help files for this filter. Pleae give me a hint where I can find this navigation filter.

Mastermho had the same troubles and found a solution, so I wanted to post his findings here:

Hi
I got the same problem.
Seems that Vista won't play any Vob from external hard drive because this is
a removable drive.
I found a solution.
You have to create a junction to a folder on the external drive.

use cmd and write (from a local drive):
mklink /J movies f:\movies

Vista will create a new "virtual" folder with this new folder you can play
all DVD files.

Regards
Mastermho

I have the same problem on my new Vista PC.   If I try to play a DVD in a Video_TS.IFO file on a USB disc, it does not work. It says it is waiting.

If I copy the folder to a local disc, it works fine.

If I use the software that came with my PC, it also works fine.  The software is CyberLink PowerDVD. So there must be something that can be controlled at the software level to fix this issue.

Thanks for info - makes me feel better if I'am not the only one - already thoughts so ;)
But it doesnt work with Microsofts MC as well - so I'am not sure if its a player only bug.
Did you try the instructions from Mastermho - I didnt have time to try myself ...

I tried the workaround - and it does work.  The only problem is I had to import from the new "virtual" folder. Of course I then had to redo all of my tagging which is kind of a pain. The good news is I only had 55 DVDs to manually retag, but it still takes time.

I don't understand why we are the only ones with this issue.  I find it hard to believe that people with DVDs have them copied to a local drive. The Video_TS folders take a ton of space.

And as I mentioned, my other software CyberLink PowerDVD works just fine accessing the USB drive (without the workaround to create a virtual folder). But I tested it with Windows Media Player - and it does not work.   ?

Vista is running on a new notebook from Fujitsu Siemens. The technical support their is a pain - they suggested to perform a firmware update of the notebook. If I buy a new notebook and the first thing I have to do is a firmware update - thats bad for custumers. I have to try before I can tell them that it's not working but unfort. I am lacking time ...

Then I still have the possibility to request support from Microsoft but thats pain as well ...

You could have saved your retagging if you would have used find and replace.

Interesting. I'm also using a Fujitsu notebook. When you say firmware update, are you talking about a bios update?

EDIT: I checked my BIOS and it is current. There is an updated one available, but that version is already installed on my PC.

Hi, I justed posted to some other guys which hardware they are using:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.de.windows.vista.multimedia&tid=2da70aee-909a-46d6-880b-83404c140bd1&cat=de_DE_20A85908-4EE8-FE87-B411-4AB4326FB01D&lang=de&cr=DE&p=1

Yes, the support requested me to update the BIOS. But as you checked it now I'll write the support a "nice" mail by tomorrow.
I'll keep you informed.

Hi Tom,

Let's see if the others are using similar hardware.

Do any of the other Vista users have this problem?

It's strange that only Tom & I are experiencing it. Unless it's related to our similar hardware.

I had a long e-mail discussion with the technical support from Fujitsu Siemens Computers. At first he pointed me to the workaround I pointed him previously :P then after a while he gave up and tried the described symptom on similar hardware but he couldn't reproduce. His conclusion is: Either it's a Vista bug or I myself "destroyed" Vista. The suggestion was to reinstall the system.
That was yesterday.

My next step is to contact Microsoft support ... will see ...
Magic_Randy: your Vista was pre-installed just as mine? Am I right?

I used this workaround on Vista for 2 years. I recently upgraded my PC to Windows 7 and am pleased to report that the workaround is no longer required.

Interesting... strange how it works on portable install fine, but not regular install  :(
Might see if I can find myself a Windows 7 disk...

I've discovered this is due to UAC being turned off.
So turn it back on again, and DVD's start playing on external USB.

Hmm nope actually that's not the whole story!
Oddly after turning on UAC, MPC player can play the Ripped DVD's fine.
Before hand MPC would come up with a message stating that incorrect region codes were being used.

MC however refuses to play the DVD - Until you open one from the same drive using MPC in which case MC can play then play them?!
If you close MPC and then close MC and then reopen it and then press play again, MC goes back to "waiting".
