Building 1st HTPC
« on: January 24, 2008, 04:54:26 am »

I'm thinking of building a box for listening to music and recoding pay per view and HBO from my charter set top box.  Found this parts list on AVS.  Looking for input on this system and suggestions for a DVD drive/burner and TV card.  Am I forgeting anything?
Thanks!

I'd be inclined to recommend XP instead of Vista.

I'd also check out www.mini-itx.com
Those tiny systems there are passively cooled so make next to no noise and they are so small you can easily put it anywhere with it blending into its environment.

Thanks for the input.  I'll probobly gowith Vista and if I don't like it I'll throw XP on it.
Not real sure how that micro would handle video.

they're designed primarily as HTPC boxes so I'd imagine quit well (not with Vista on it though).

Why would you even consider Vista?  First of all you shouldn't ever see the OS during normal day to day operations.  You're in MC OS.  XP seems faster and more stable.  At the very least you would probably disable Aero Glass to speed things up--of course it probably is disabled when theater view launches.
