Ever since I added Quicktime/iTunes to my system, MC12 is having issues with MOV files.  Basically, anytime MC12 touches an MOV file the system switches to Vista Basic Color until (usually) MC12 is done with the file.  This switch to/from basic color is a very intrusive change that makes using the PC during the change impossible.  Since many/most video podcasts I subscribe to are MOV files, this issue can occur at any time while MC12 is running - since it can download/analyze a new MOV file at any time.

Playing Quicktime files directly with any media player other than MC12 (Windows Media Player or Quicktime) works correctly - no issues.  The issue only occurs when MC12 is in the MOV loop.

For example:
  • When MC12 anaylizes downloaded MOV files, Vista switches to basic color then back to normal when done.
  • Playing MOV directly in MC12 causes the switch to basic color until after I close MC12 - it does not switch back when the file is done, even if I play another non-MOV file with MC12.
  • After adding QuickTimePlayer.exe as a valid 'send to external' app.  Using 'send to external', Vista changed to basic color until after I closed Quicktime.  Sending the exact same file to WMP11 as an external app does not cause this issue.

The only 'fix' I have found is to uninstall Quicktime - but then MC12 can no longer handle MOV files (can't play or analyze for length/cover art).

Is anyone running Vista/MC12/Quicktime WITHOUT this issue?

I assume you mean Aero is disabled?

My Vista and MC is fine.

Under DirectShow filters for MOV, ensure you have Video Renderer set to "Video Mixing Renderer 9".

Do you have Quicktime installed?

Yes - basic color means that Aero gets disabled.  When Aero gets disabled/re-enabled it is as intrusive as UAC kicking in so anything you are working on gets interrupted.  This occurs when MOV is both checked and un-checked under the directshow filters settings.  Video Renderer is set to Video Mixing Renderer 9.  When MOV is enabled for DirectShow playback, the only Filter checked is the JRiver Bitrate Monitor filter.  What filters are you using for MOV?

Having DirectShow enabled for MOV files changes the symptoms:
MC12 plays MOV files w/o the Basic Color switch.
Downloading still causes the switch, but only once instead of twice.  I see the FFDShow icons show up where the first switch used to happen then a few seconds later (after FFDShow is done) the switch occurs.  Best guess is that it is happening when building the thumbnail but I am not sure.
Sending to External > Quicktime still causes the issue as well.

I had the Aero problem a long time ago and think I solved it by changing the video renderer.

Yes I have QuickTime installed. I recently learned by experimentation that it is important to have QuickTime 7 installed. Version 6 was causing me problems with some video types.

For anyone NOT having the issue, what 'source' and 'other' filters do you have configured for MOV files IN JRMC12?

Uninstalling QuickTime fixes the problem - so the issue is somewhere in the interaction between MC and QuickTime.

Can confirm that uninstalling Quicktime 'fixes' the problem (but breaks iTunes).
Reinstalled Quicktime and the problem came right back.

Looking through the event logs when the issue occurs I find:
Application JRWorker.exe locked the primary surface 3 time(s).

From what I can tell from looking online - locking the primary surface is what is causing Aero to disable temporarily.
For what it is worth, I am running the SP1 Evaluation Copy (build 6001) - so there may be a difference between RTM and SP1.

JRWorker must have been using Quicktime engine for analyzing or thumbnailing the MOV files. Have you told MC to use DirectShow to play MOV files? If you have proper DirectShow filters that handle MOV type, you may be able to avoid Quicktime and thus this particular problem.

These two filters might work with your MOV files.

What is wierd about the issue is that natively playing the files with Quicktime does NOT cause the problem.  Only when MC12 gets involved with the QT interaction does the problem occur.

Tried those - problem still occurred, but the video didn't play (black screen).

Along the same lines, I checked ffdshow audio and video to force MC12 to use those - and the problem isn't there now.

Is there any way to see exactly what filters/codecs MC12 is using/choosing for specific files?  Logging doesn't seem to include this info.

EDIT:  Spoke too soon - the problem is still there, the system was still in Basic Color mode from the test of the nero filters.

This is DEFINITELY happening during thumbnail creation.  Just deleted the thumbnail from one of the MOV files and the system kicked back to basic color mode when it re-created it.

MC tries to use user-selected filters. Failing that, it relies on DirectShow's default behavior, i.e. using the filters that have higher merit values and correct media types.

If a filter graph is successfully built and running, you can see which filters are in use by right clicking the video screen and choose DirectShow Filters submenu. The info is also logged in the log file (see entries that begin with "DumpGraph").

I have not seen a good set of filters that can handle all MOV videos. Some MOV files are just mp4, which are easily handled in DirectShow, some are not.

The funny thing is, MC12 has NO problems analyzing or playing the files now that I have told it to use DirectShow for MOV.  It uses Haali and FFDShow for playback and does not cause the 'basic color' switch.  It only has an issue creating the thumbnail or sending the file to Quicktime as an external app (same file plays w/o issue directly in Quicktime). It also has the issue playing the file if I unselect DirectShow for MOV.

Are you saying even though MC plays MOV files using DirectShow, it still has issues while creating thumbnails? It should first attempt to create thumbnails using DirectShow. If that fails MC falls back to Quicktime. For some reason, when creating thumbnails in background processes, there tends to be more failures in DirectShow graph building. That could explain what you observed.

What you describe is what appears to be happening.

The file downloads.
Upon completion the Haali/FFDShow icons appear on the taskbar for a moment.
The Haali/FFDShow icons appear again for a moment (or maybe just the Haali icon - its so brief I am not sure).
Then the second or two later the system switches to/from basic color, and when done the thumbnail is there.

I am assuming that MC12 is sucsefully using DS for analyzing the file, but not for creating the thumbnails.

I'm seeing this behavior too--with DS-enabled importing/thumbnailing/playback of mp4 files. According to my MC settings, QuickTime is not involved....

I thought I was hallucinating when I noticed it a couple of builds ago. It's definitely happening with the most recent build (444).

I do have QT installed, but this feels like a DS issue. I'm using the CCCP codec pack (Haali, FFDShow).

Except that (on my system, and I bet if you try it on yours too) when I uninstall QuickTime the problem goes away.  When I reinstall QuickTime the problem comes right back.

As another followup to this... I can confirm it happening when I playback a ripped DVD (VIDEO_TS file). Looking at the filters, it was playing back using the Legacy Video Renderer.

After switching my options for DVD playback to use EVR, I no longer lose Aero when playing a DVD.
