If I rip say, five CDs worth of music and want them all on a single playlist, must I drag each song into Build Playlist, or is there a way to simply make Recently Ripped into a playlist immediately?

If you mean dragging them one at a time you don't need to do that. You can select all files and drag them all at once. (Edit > Select All or Ctrl+A)

You can also right-click the Recently Ripped playlist in the tree and select "Send To > Playlist > Create Playlist..." or simply drag the Recently Ripped tree item into Build Playlist.
