Installing MJ v.8 & invalid page fault
« on: August 05, 2002, 07:29:47 am »

Read & saved all the info here on v.8 installation, nbacked up library, had my reg'n floppy ready, closed all proggies, have tried to instal 3 times, gets as far as "prepatring Installation Wizard", then Win 98SE closes it down, saying that MJ caused invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll.
I don't fancy digging through MSKB re kernel 32.dll page faults cos MS doesn't organise its KB for easy use.
Can anyone help me? I d/loaded today from yr website, & the file says MediaJukebox.exe 8803 KB.

Adding to my post. Cleared cache, histry, temp internet files, rebooted several times, still same result. Can't find 7.2 d/load, though it should be on a CD-ROM somewhere, so I can't try uninstalling v.7.2 cos if v.8 still won't instal, I'll have nothing.
Feel I'm doomed to never upgrade. Win98SE, Pentium 3, plenty space, nothing running in backgrouns, firewall & A/V closed down too - does anyone have any ideas?

>> Win98SE
WinXP May Help

for a test:

reduce colors to 16
reduce screen size to 640x480

and try to reinstall

other than that, maybe new video drivers?

Below are my original post and replies which mirror the problem in this thread.  Per Jim's request I'm copying here and adding the following:

Firewall is incorporated into 2 Wire router running Verizon DSL. Dell PII at 350, video card stb nvidia zx 8mb, Norton anti virus.  Can't copy info from MJ as it is not installed on that machine, even an older version.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I've read every post on these boards regarding install problems. I've tried cleaning out temp files, downloading over and over, etc. Can't get MJ to install.
I use this on 2 other machines with no problems. This is a win98SE machine. When I try to install, after setup meter gets across the screen, I get a GPF. Here's the details:
INSTALLWIZARD caused a general protection fault

MJ install file is 8.803K. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

2 ideas that might help:
-Update the video driver
-Temporarily change the desktop resolution

Dave 08-01-2002 07:51:28 P.M.

Thanks, Matt...but neither worked. Still in the dark.

Hi Dave;
Sometimes when I have similar problems, I find that re-installing over the bad install seldom works.
Suggest the following…
1: Using the “Windows control Panel, Add or Remove Programs” un-install MJ. This will often clean out the old files that may be causing the problem.
2: Do a new install of the latest version of MJ (8.0.336).
3: Also you might try doing the new install in a different folder (just in case there are any rouge MJ files lurking about looking for MJ in the old folder.
HAVE FUN?

Dave 08-02-2002 03:20:05 P.M.

Thanks for the tip, but MJ never installed on this machine. I have MusicMatch installed...wonder if that would affext it?

Did you also delete the Temporary Internet files? IE/Tools/Internet Options/Temp Internet/ delete.
I talked with someone else yesterday when I first saw your post. He thought it was dying when rar tried to unzip the files. This suggests a temp file problem or an incompatibility with our unzip. Dig around in explorer to see if you can find out where the files are going.
Disk space?

Dave 08-05-2002 07:15:45 P.M.

I've dumped all the IE temp files and have over 30 gig disk space. I see another post here with same problem I'm having. I've tried everything suggested, including trying to install over my home network. No luck.
This is an old Pentium 2 machine which I planned to be my drone music server. I'd hate to have to resort to MS media player...

Dave,
Can you post on the other thread and see if you can find anything in common? Speed of machine, maybe, but firewall, virus checker, video card, etc.
You can copy your system info from MJ help and paste it there.
I'll close this thread when you post.
Thanks,
Jim

I tried 16 colours & 640x800, still same result. I'd cleared cache & temp files prior to this.
I can't instal to a different folder, cos it never gets that far - all that happens is that it "prepares the Instal. Wizard", gets near the end of that part, then the same thing happens with kernel32.dll.
I'd uninstall MJ 7.2 from Control Panel, but I don't think it would make a difference as it never gets as far as Installshield's actual install - & I don't have a copy of the original 7.2 download - that particular CD-ROM it was burned to, has been a casualty of my moving house.
Not trying to be difficult - I'm not ready for XP yet plus the time it would take to ensure h/ware compatibility & find & install all the new drivers I'd need for that. My present video card hasn't given me any problems, it's a Diamond v770 for Windows [I'm not a gamer, think it says 32MB RAM]. Would new drivers help? You can see I'm just your garden-variety user. Anyway, here is my system info from MJ, hope it'll help:-

Seems no-one can help me with this, & I can't be sure that new video drivers will help. I can't try out the Ape encoder, as it & some other plugins are for V.8. Will the next build instal for me, does anyone know?  Anyhow, here is the error message I get from MJ, it happens just when the actual install seems about to begin.

The STB Video Card maybe a problem since that old video card has mega problems.

Is there a way you could try another?

when things don't work correctly windows 98 will crap out, windows XP might help. Some of the problems in Windows98 was fixed in WindowsME.

I think you are running in to a Hardware\OS Problem.

The "old" video card was bought new last year, obsolence is faster than I thought. [Is STB the same as Diamond Viper v770?] I'm not ready, either financially or time-wise, for installation issues of XP, & obviously I'm no teckie. Hadn't a clue why there's been all this advice re display,  thinking to myself what's MJ got to do with that, plus MJ 7.2 installed just fine. Bear with me, cos I dug around to see what my ignorance might possibly find - & I think it may have, I just don't what to do about it or how to do it.
Checked my System info, display showed 7 items - "Driver not installed". Now I don't know how this came to be, nor can I understand why my machine still functions this way. These are listed dmtiger.ppm
dmlogo.ppm
dmlake.ppm
dmtiger.x
dmteepot.x
DMintro.avi
vpr770.inf

Is this my problem? If it is, do I ask Windows itself to find them, don't laugh cos I'm near sure I've seen this happen or I was dreaming. Or do I get them on the Web? I'd really appreciate some help here, I'm still quite gob-smacked that my machine still runs without these.

Sorry but I want to add to that. After my last post, checked Device Manager though I'd looked there B4, found the bit on driver file info & updating. Then Windows recommended an updated driver that it must be hatching - am I supposed to say yes?

If I Am Not Mistaken (and Maybe) STB cards have not been made since before 1999, the company went bust and was bought by vodoo, then vodoo went bust and sold the whole company to nvidia for around 128 million.

as for the problem, who knows.

OK, so those drivers not installed may or may not be the cause.
In the meantime, MJ7.2 works fine, as does everything else.
I just can't install the new version, it won't unzip itself properly.
Thanks for replies anyway.
Am I to assume that v.7.2 has also exceeded its use-by date?
Cos all MJ's plugins seem to be for v.8.
Are the 7.2 plugins available at all?

The plug-ins listed are the only ones available.

I wish we could solve your problem, but we may not be able to.
