Importing iTunes Ratings
« on: March 31, 2008, 09:45:33 am »

Sorry if I asked but my co-worker is fed up with iTunes (and me constantly talking about MC) and is considering switching.  Possibly MJ (for free and only music) but his last issue is his ratings.  Can MJ/MC import ratings from iTunes?  He's gotta have that to switch.

He also majored in music performance in college!

There's an iTunes ratings import tool called "benn600" that they'll probably find themselves using... :P

His response is: "Like you're gonna do it all for me?"

Yes.  Export playlist in iTunes.  Import in MC.

Matt,

Maybe the iTunes xml reader has a bug, but currently the ratings are not imported. Also the Composer field does not seem to convert. The other usual standard tags are imported correctly. I just tried this with a couple of wave files (so that MC couldn't access any file tags). My iTunes build is not the very latest (I have 7.4.2.4), but I assume Apple has not changed the xml format recently.

For now, the best solution is to export and import five separate playlists, one for each rating. After that it is easy to mass rate the files in the imported playlists.

Apple changed a bunch of field names (including Rating). We'll get it hooked up again in the next build.

For now you may filter all one stared tracks and export it as a playlist. Import into MC and rate 'em all with one star. Do the same for all two started tracks etc. etc.

My impatient, young mind did not allow me to read you post to the very end. I probably gave up after a couple of lines, after having gotten what I though was the essential -- that iTunes had reworked their XML files. I guess I have gotten too used to the 150 character limit of SMS messages :)
I hope you will find room in your heart to forgive me :)
