Feature Request: Search Highlighting
« on: April 23, 2008, 05:40:34 am »

I've always wanted something like this and wondered if MC might be able to do it...

Would it be possible to highlight the text in the view pane as it is typed into the search box?  I'm thinking something similar to Firefox's "search as I type" feature where matching text results are highlighted on a webpage.  I would love it if MC could show me the matching text results in each file as I type into the search box.  Many of my files have scattered data throughout the various tag fields and I have a hard time locating specific text strings; if they were highlighted, it would be easier to find and edit them when necessary.

Hope you guys can do this!

Thanks

After you search, try editing "on screen".  Slow double click on the field you want to edit.  When you finish, use up or down arrow to edit the same tage in the next file.

That really isn't what he was asking, Jim.

I think this would be kind of neat.

Yeah, that wasn't what I was asking.  I know I can edit tags quickly the way you mentioned.
What I'm hoping for is the ability to see where the searched text is throughout all the various tags in each file.  I tend to write a bunch of metadata in the Comment field of my tags, so that I can create genre/category smartlists easily, but editing the information can become difficult when songs have more than one category type written into the comment field.

Here is an example of what I'm thinking would be a great way to implement this feature.

I can quickly glance at the view pane above and find all instances of the word "piano" throughout.  This makes it easy to edit that specific word in each tag because I don't have to go hunting for it.

See, on a webpage that kind of functionality is really helpful.

But in all the yrs i've used MC, never felt the need to have this. If i'm tagging or searching its usually 'a' field at a time. Never, really across as many fields as you have in your pic illustrated above. Does anyone do it like this  ?

You can get pretty close already without highlighting.

F3, enter your text there, and then hit F3 to find the next.

I'd still be stoked to see this feature.  My library has metadata spread all over the place and pinpointing specific words can be a real hassle when I don't know exactly where to look.  I have a feeling that not everybody would like highlighting, but can we at least have the option to enable it?

A little bird told me this will be available soon in a coming build of Media Center 13.

Has this feature been considered for Media Center 14?
I'm still very keen on search highlighting.  It gives search some perspective~!

It's there if you use quick search (Ctrl+Q).

Why isn't this a standard feature of the search box in the top right of the player?  If media center can do it already, I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to see their search queries highlighted.
