Dramatically Improved "Startup" Performance
« on: September 15, 2008, 11:57:53 pm »

I just thought I'd mention... I'm noticing dramatically improved performance in starting MC13 up compared to MC12.  With MC12, it loads immediately, but a few seconds later becomes unresponsive for a short period.  This has been a long-standing issue with MC12.

MC13 has no such post-launch lag, even when using an exact replica of my Library with it.  Don't know if it is the additional threading work that has been done, or anything like that, but whatever it is... Good job!

Yep, I noticed this too! Very nice...

One small issue I havn't resolved yet though is when I "shutdown" MC. It disappears from view immediately (as you'd expect) but remains on my taskbar (Win XP) for 5-10 seconds. In other words, the "Media Center 13.exe" process "sticks" around after I hit the close button. I don't see this with MC12.

Might need to raise a new thread..

Hey, same here  :D

For me closing works fine (Vista HP).

I played with it a LOT last night (and so did my wife while I was till at work), and it is definitely better.  The VERY first thing she said, after complaining that the remote didn't work (I hadn't updated my Girder GML for MC13 yet), was "hey, it doesn't do that freeze thing anymore".

She's impressed.  Likes the Links a lot too.  (I came home and she was looking all sorts of stuff up in IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes.)

Good work guys.  Whatever you did, don't change it.

1 or 2 seconds - that's nice!

Hello,
I dunno... In my case, since I upgraded to MC13, the startup times been actually much longer. MC13 stalls at start-up for 30-40 sec if not longer. I checked the log and it seems that the longest thing there is the handheld enumeration. The same was with MC12 but it wouldn't freeze the MC. Now, with MC13, it's completely frozen (can't click anything) for up to 1 min on startup.
What can I do to improve/fix this?
TIA!

Check for any drives that aren't there anymore.  Take a look at what Windows Explorer sees.

Try MC's Redetect Devices under Options/Handhelds.

I too notice the shutdown lag.  I can add that I see heavy HDD usage after closing MC until it fully closes--about 10 seconds later.

Thanks!
Did the redetect and it seemed to help.
However, MC still would stall when I would try to expand the Drives and Devices tree branch.
I had a virtual drive mounted which was linked to an image file on a network drive. Once I unmouted it everything went back to normal.
Looks like MC13 is very slow with dealing with remote/networked things - one of my handhelds was actually a folder on a network drive.
I believe MC12 didn't have this problem, but I can be wrong.
Thanks again,
