MC13 & WHS
« on: November 04, 2008, 01:33:06 pm »

Can MC13 be installed on Windows Home Server? I currently run MC13 on a HTPC and use a mapped drive on the server as the source for the library server. If the HTPC isn't on then none of the other pc's can use the library server.
Could an "Add In" be written for WHS that would become a minimal library server for other PC's on the network?

You could just store your library in a WHS shared directory... that wouldn't serve media but you could use MC from your other PCs.

I don't know about 13, but I have installed 12 on WHS and it worked fine.

Don't see much reason as to why it would not work on WHS, when it works in Vista. Server 2008 have practicaly the same support for apps, as it's core, drivers and other parts of the OS are similar to Vista. WHS is just a dumbed down and specialised version of Server 2008.

I'm glad to hear it has worked but I'm reluctant to install any full programs on WHS except the add ins specifically designed for it. Wouldn't it be useful to have an add in from JRiver that provided just the library server functionality to the other full Media Center installations on the network?

Small clarification - WHS is based on Server 2003 not 2008, so has little in common with Vista!  Still should work though...

I have MC12 running on my WHS as a service. It works but has some shortcomings.

Once it is running you cannot stop it by stopping the service. You have to kill the MC process yourself.
If e.g. WHS reboots it kills MC. The bad thing is that after 3 times killing MC a stupid dialog will pop up waiting
for you to click which you can't because it's not visible when starting as a service.
If this happens you have to log in as Admin and start MC on your desktop to click away the dialog during startup.
After that you can let MC run as service for another 3 times.

Another thing is that MC doesn't update it's library when running as service.
You have to start and stop it yourself (procedure see above).

It is one of my biggest disappointments with MC that JRiver is not willing to help us any further on this topic.

Yea. You're right. Built on 2003 SP2...

Integration should be even smoother then :)

I think I know which dialog you mean. It's the one saying something like "MC has died, try disabling plugins etc and try again" (or something to that effect). Is this right? If so, on that same dialog is a check box for "don't show me this again".

So, kill MC 3 times from the taskmanager to show this message, and then tick the checkbox to never see it again.

I remember trying that but i think it showed up again. I will check that, thanks.

But then you have to be sure the library you want to serve is the default library.
