Facebook and flickr uploader
« on: November 29, 2008, 03:06:23 am »

2. Photos are being uploaded in reverse order using both the facebook and flickr uploader. (I know that they should be uploaded in reverse to make sure they show up in order, but they are actually showing up in reverse to the way they are sorted in my original playlist).

3. Also, quotation marks in the captions of photos are getting garbled when viewed on facebook.

Hi,

Could you show me what you mean by the first item.  It is behaving exactly as I expect.  I'm not sure if what you are seeing is different or if what you expect is different.

Whups!  I didn't realize that splitting a thread removed the original post from the original thread.  I would not have deleted all the other items from the post if I had.  Sorry.

Hi Darkpenguin,

The process I was using started by making a playlist of images. Then I'd send the playlist to external>flickr, but they were showing up on flickr in the opposite order to that of the playlist that I had made in MC.

I will test it again tonight.

Re: facebook. Symbols such as quote marks in captions are garbled when they are uploaded to facebook.
One more thing, could you give us the option to choose which field we want to use for the caption for facebook, like you do for flickr. That is really useful, being able to write different captions for the different audiences.

The garbled quote thing should be fixed.

Looking into the other one.

The uploads are appearing as I expect.  I think I need a couple of screen shots.

I think I seee what is happening. The photos are being uploaded in the right order to show up in playlist order in yuor photostream. But if they are put into a set, they appear in the set in reverse order. Personally, I'd rather have them appear in the set as they do in my playlist, since that is where photos are in an organized state. The photostream is chaos anyway, so I dont mind what order they appear in there.

I'm getting "Upload failed" error every time I try to create a new set and upload it.

Hmmm...  That's exactly what I tested.  I'll load this build and give it a try.  Do you have a pro account?  Otherwise I think the number of sets is limited.

Did it load any of the photos?

That seems to work.  Maybe flickr was unhappy at that time.

Did it upload any of the photos?  Or did it fail to create or add photos to the set?

It seems to be failing on just one of my playlists. Another that I tried uploaded ok. Can you think of any reasons why it might be doing this? Will the reason show up in the log?

I spoke too soon. When it finished uploading it said upload failed. But this time it actually uploaded the files but failed before doing them all. It made the set though.

I tried uploading a third playlist and it uploaded without errors. But the other two both fail. One before it even gets any images up, and the other at the half way point.

Ok, It seems to be just specific images that it is failing on. Here is a log of trying to upload one photo and it failing:

Neat.

What is the meta data of the photo you're uploading?  (Name, caption, description, etc. ) What is the set name?  What is the actual name of the photo you're uploading?

Just got a new one

"Invalid signature"
"Unable to create set"
"Images uploaded succesfully"

Could it be because I had the "&" character in the set title?

Tried to upload 43 photos (190Mb) using the uploader. It failed twice, after 96Mb, on the same photo.
Trying to work out why, I fired up flickr's uploadr software and added the photos to that, and for some reason, it has decided that three of the photos are no good, and the first one that MC attempts to upload causes the entire job to abort...

Now, these three photos all appear to be fine. They load up in every image viewing software app I have installed here, so what's wrong?
According to Bad Peggy, these photos have "Corrupt JPEG data - 19 extraneous bytes before marker $E2" (?)
I have a hunch that this corruption occurred when I experienced yet another playingnow induced crash whilst tagging these photos. Does that sound plausible?
I've zipped the three files up, at just under 10Mb they can be downloaded from here.

Is there any way MC could check files in the same way the flickr uploadr does, or better still, do the job that bad peggy does?

Finally, one more problem is that MC's uploader is not retrieving an up-to-date list of existing sets for the "Add to set" option.

I had the same thing happen with a few of my images too. Marko, have you uploaded a lot of photos to flickr using MC before? If so, and if this is the first time this kind of thing has happened to you, then I think it might be MC doing something naughty.

I had only used the MC interface to upload one album of about 20 pics before using it again recently and hitting these problems. The first time I used it, everything was fine except for the reverse order in sets issue.

I'm not sure what has caused these "19 extraneous bytes before marker $E2"

As MC, AcdSee, XnView, Picture and Fax Viewer, Photoshop all open the "corrupt" files and read the metadata just fine, I can only assume that they have built in tolerances regarding 'extraneous bytes' and that flickr is much more stringent.

The flickr uploadr is obviously performing an integrity check on the files, probably similar to that carried out by the "bad peggy" software, and the MC uploadr is not performing the check, meaning that when the bad files hit the flickr website, it says "no way" and the entire upload is aborted.

This is the first serious upload task I've thrown at the MC uploader, and to be fair, once I'd removed the three bad files from the Q, they all went up just fine and dandy, were placed in the requested set, in the correct order.

I intend to use the MC uploader on a pretty regular basis now that my brother has emigrated to New Zealand.

I'm hoping that Matt, Bob or perhaps Yaobing might be able to shed some light as to where these extraneous bytes have come from. The three files in question were copies of the original files, created using a batch file that makes the copy, adds the _edited_1 part to the filename and opens it in photoshop. While I'm working on the file in photoshop, autoimport gets busy importing the file and all its metadata, before I save the file from photoshop, which wipes most of said metadata, but, that doesn't matter because by that time, MC has it in its database. After I save the changes, autoimport goes to work again, updating for external changes.
Somewhere in all of that, corruption has crept in. I should add at this point that I have done this with hundreds of files and these are the first three I've ran into problems with.

I'll leave bad peggy scanning the entire picture folder (14 gigs worth) while I'm sleeping and report the results later.

=====

How about existing set retrieval?
If you upload some images to a new set, MC should do as requested.
Now, try and add some more images to that new set...
Do you see it in the drop down "Add to set" list?

Set MC uploading 51 photos (247Mb) and went to bed.

Everything worked out as expected with no problems what-so-ever.

Excellent feature. Thank you.

I have not read the whole thread, but I found a couple of issues with the facebook uploader the other day.
  • It seems that there is a limit on 60 photos per album. If there is more than 60 pictures they should maybe be placed in albums more albums automatically. If there are 90 pictures the 60 first pictures are placed in "[album name] I" and the last 30 are placed in "[album name] II".
  • International character does not seem to be supported. At least I got an error using the latest MC13 (I think), when uploading something like "... På ...".
  • The Facebook uploader does not support videos. Is this intentional? I am not a Facebook user myself so I do not know if the platform support videos. If it does MC should support it somehow. From the Facebook help it seems like you need a application. I have no idea what this is, but maybe Pix01 could be used to host videos, if needed, and embed them in Facebook.

Thanks,
Rasmus
