MC ignoring DirectShow settings for MP4 files?
« on: January 24, 2009, 05:12:11 pm »

I've got three boxes running MC 12.   On all three, I've set up MC to use DirectShow for MP4 and M4V files, then library-imported two videos encoded in Xvid with MP4 containers.  On two of the three boxes, when I double-click the MP4 videos, MC plays the files.   On one of the boxes, despite the DS settings, MC tries to use QuickTime instead -- I know this because I get a dialog from QuickTime saying it can't recognize the video type and wants to install more files.  However, if I go to the file manager in Vista, select the videos, then right-click and select Media Center > Play, the videos play.  So, it's as if MC treats the files differently if they're in the library than if they're passed in using the shell extension.  The box in question is running a new install of Vista, CCCP, and MC12.

I removed the files from the library, then tried it again, but had the same results.  One of the reasons I bought MC was to be able to use its video library features, so this is a bit annoying.

Thoughts?

I assume you checked the DirectShow settings.  Double check the video renderer setting.  I think that it's set in the same location in MC12.

You could try MC13.  It has improved Directshow support.

I do remember a similar problem from around a year ago.  Maybe someone will remember the details.

All three instances are using the same DS settings.  (Is there a way to script out what the settings are, so that they can be posted in the forum?)  All three are using the same default settings that come from specifying DS playback for MP4 files (VMR9, no source filters selected, only "other" filter selection is "JRiver Bitrate Monitor filter").  I searched the wiki but didn't find any clear recommendations for "source/other" filter selection, so I left the default selections.

Before I installed MC 12, I installed the MC 13 beta on this box, but it had the same problem.  (I then uninstalled that, and installed my licensed copy of MC 12.)

I also just tried setting the renderer to EVR, since it's a Vista box, and also using the Haali splitter, to no avail.

From the log, it looks to me like MC is not recognizing its own DS settings:
