using default video renderer reduces colour depth

When I play videos using the automatic setting for renderer, it chooses "Video Mixing Renderer 9" which results in reduced colour depth producing bars of colour on any colour gradient. It looks pretty bad.

I switched to "Legacy Video Renderer" in the File Types section and then it looks fine.

This happens in both MC 13 and MC 14, and it happens both with CoreAVC and FFDshow as the filter.

Does anyone know what the problem is,

and if not, does anyone know what I am losing by switching to the Legacy Video Renderer?

VMR9 is generally superior to Legacy Video Renderer.  It lets you take advantage of hardware acceleration of your graphics card.  But if your video card driver is buggy, you may have trouble using it.  See Leezer's advice on MC14 board.
