OT: Harddisck MP3 player for home use?
« on: July 08, 2002, 12:10:59 am »

Hello,

I like my MJ very much: I use it in my hobbyroom (that's separate from my house). What I do not like is starting the p.c. up: that lasts about 2 and a half minute!
So I'm looking for use in my house a MP3-player that:
- fits with my stereo-installation (i.e. 43 cm wide)
- uses a hard-disc

So: not a DVD-MP3 player, that uses discs for playing.

Anyone a suggestion for a model or a website to find such a thing?

Been checking out some of these units. The PDHercules II has been released recently - 20G drive, USB transfers, no Internet connection but claims a built-in CDDB database that gets you over that hurdle, etc. Around $400 US. Rio of course has a very pricey Internet-enabled unit that currently retails for around $1500 - has received mixed reviews.

Pretty full comparison of various models at http://electronics.cnet.com/electronics/search/0,10126,0-9400736-1302-0,00.html?tag=st.ce.9400736-1305-9622779.subnav-coco.9400736-1302-0&pi=9622779&pd=Perception|PLS|Digital|PLS|PDHercules|PLS|Digital|PLS|Recordable|PLS|Jukebox|PLS|II

My impression: we're still looking at first gen products, maybe should wait 6 months or so to see what shakes out (larger drives are critical, ditto higher encoding speeds), ITMW stick in a little extra memory or shift to DSL or cable if available.

Also check out the Audiotron.  It fits right in with your stereo components, but it streams your mp3s, rather than needing it's own hard drive.
