IPOD issue
« on: November 15, 2009, 10:01:21 pm »

I just got a new workstation, loaded up Win7 Ultimate 64, followed by my copy of MC12. MC12 absolutely refuses to see either my 160G Ipod Classic or my gen 4 60G IPod.
the pc is seeing both, i loaded up ITunes 7, and it sees the IPOD as well, but JRiver refuses.
On a whim, I downloaded a trial version of MC14 to see if maybe this is the straw to force me to purchase and upgrade, and still no joy...no ipod detected.
Any ideas?

MC12 is quite old.  There's been Win7 compatibility enhancements in MC14.  I'd suggest you update.

Thanks for your reply.
While I agree that i'm running a pretty old version, as I mentioned in the original post, I did indeed try downloading a trial version of the newest release of MC14, and my ipod was not detected there. If I can get MC14 to work, I would purchase an upgrade, but if I'm going to have the same problems, and I haven't seen any other compelling reason to upgrade (not that MC14 doesn't have enhancements, just none that fit my needs).
My personal guess is this is more of a 64bit issue than either a win7 or MC issue, but I'm noticing a few others are having the same issue...i'd love to get this resolved for everyone.
I ended up wiping my IPod classic, and did a restore to factory first thing this morning. I'll report back later on whether that helped or not...I hope so, as I'm missing my tunes.

I can't help with much more detail since I don't have those specific devices.
Try the 'redetect devices' option in MC14's options screen.
If that doesn't cause them to appear then you'll probably need help from JR staff.

Also, try this.
With no device connected to cable, start MC.
Enable handheld logging.
Attach the device.
Wait a few minutes.
Save the log file for JR staff.

tried the redetect many times, no joy.
But the logging is exactly what I was looking for. Where do i turn this on at? I didn't see any screens to enable logging in my brief check.

Help > Logging
Check box to output to a file.
At the bottom for the types of events to log, check HANDHELD and GENERAL.
That should be all they need.

Attach ipod.
Wait 120 seconds  for it to not be detected.

Don't touch anything or click around anywhere else.
Immediately go back to Help > Logging  and view the log file.
Save it somewhere so it can be emailed to staff.

Thanks again. It looks like the IPod is seen (or at least JR is seeing "A" device) and then fails.
I'm going to try a bit deeper tonight, but I'm actually thinking it's not seeing *any* devices. I have a bunch of mp3 players to try, so I'll hopefully try all of the different players tonight to see if it's detecting anything.

MC14 is detecting an 8G sansa no problem, but neither IPOD is being detected. I have the log files ready to send, but I'm not finding an email addy to send the report to...
Also, it's showing my system as 6.1 with 4G of memory,. where as I'm running Win7 64bit with 6g. Wondering if that's an eye to the cause.

Try matt at jriver dot com.  What exact build number of MC does the log show?

Thanks for the log.

Your Windows 7 system is failing when we try to create the interface / COM control CLSID_MediaDevMgr.  This is the main entry point into the Windows device subsystem.  I've never seen it fail.

The error is 0x80040154 / Class not registered.

Is it possible there's some tricky permission or installation issue on your system?  Like I said, we have lots of Windows 7 users (myself included) and we haven't seen this before.

Also, I would not expect a Sansa to appear either with this failing, so that's also mysterious.

Thanks.

Thanks for replying.
i saw that error in the logs...
There's nothign special at all about the machine (at least that was done intentionally). Stock install of Windows 7 64 ultimate logged on to a domain, and my account is a domain admin, so permissions *shouldn't* be an issue.
The only changes I've made were in the Local Security Policy:
Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation: Disabled
Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode: Disabled

Just noticed and wondering...the "Only elevate UIAccess applications that are installed in secure location" is Enabled...Possibility?

This shouldn't require elevation, but you could try running Media Center elevated to see if it makes any difference.

You might also look here in the registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{25BAAD81-3560-11D3-8471-00C04F79DBC0}\InprocServer32

On Vista (which is what I'm on right now), it points to mswmdm.dll which is a valid file in my system folder.

search for both "25BAAD81" and "mswmdm" in the registry turn up empty. Ideas on What or Where the COM is in Win7?

That's the problem.

I just checked a Windows 7 system here and it looks the same as Vista.

Do you have mswmdm.dll on your system?  What happens if you register it (regsvr32.exe mswmdm.dll)?  Is this a European Windows 7 with some pieces (like WMP) removed?

Thanks.

i actually didn't find MSWMDM.dll at all, although I'm not fond of the new file search in Win7....could be wrong.
This is an american version, but I should mention, it's an MSDN copy of windows...not sure if that impacts it.

You might try WMP and see if it can see devices.  It should use the same Windows device subsystem for enumerating devices.

Exactly where I was headed...only to find that not only is WMP not loaded, I don't have the Windows Media Center or any other of the default Ultimate media-related software.
I'm betting this is the issue...I'll report back when I figure out why the heck I'm missing a bunch of apps.

This might help:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=31017ed3-166a-4c75-b90c-a6cef9b414c4&displayLang=en

We will have to do some work to better handle device detection when WMDM doesn't exist.  It's not really needed for an iPod or drive-style device, but since WMDM has always existed, our engine isn't happy without it.  For us, this may be a Media Center 15 change since it will be quite involved.
