I can't playback audio cd's or rip audio cd's  
I can play DVD and get video with audio as well as playing mp3's in MC without any problems.
  
Dell Studio 1557, pre-installed with Windows7t 64bit from Dell,  i7 1.6Ghz processor, Windows7 64bit, HL-DT-ST RW DVD GA11n 8x slot drive with IDT audio codecs (v102).

Are your audio problems in all programs or just MC? I would try playing one back using Media Player and see what happens.

Audio works for DVD/MP3 playback in MC.   Audio CD's play and work in itunes, windows media player, windows media center but not in MC.  MC shuffles through each song and plays nine seconds of the same thing over and over like a test sound.

I ran into a similar sounding problem a while back now.

As far as I was able to determine, my problems were caused by Windows deciding that my IDE CD/DVD drives were using a SCSI interface, not IDE (check device manager) and the solution for me was to reinstall my motherboard INF drivers.

Any direction to a motherboard inf install would be helpful.   I have never done that before.

Before you dive into that, can you confirm that you're seeing the same problem that I was?
Are you getting the same weird failure messages, and more crucially, do you have IDE drives showing as SCSI drives in device manager?

If yes, did your DELL come with a system drivers disc? If not, is your laptop a Dell Studio 1557?

I did a quick search for you which only produced more questions:
Did your laptop come with Windows 7 installed, or was it upgraded from Vista?

I ask because I see that in July last year, Dell released a firmware upgrade for your optical drive which, I quote, "adds support for windows 7"
If your laptop came with windows 7 preinstalled, you shouldn't need this update.

If not, and you performed the windows seven instal yourself, then you could well be needing this firmware update from Dell.

Please exhaust all other advise and options in the thread I linked to before resorting to running the update. It's not a driver, it's a firmware update for your hardware that will change the operating parameters of your optical drive, and should only be used once you've determined that you really need it.

Dell Studio 1557 came pre-installed from factory with Windows7 64 bit.  I have tried both versions 101 and v102 of the CD/DVD player.    Neither version
impacts audio cd playback.  Still broken.   No SCSI errors are coming up.  Only IDE is showing.

If your drive is not showing in device manager as a "SCSI Device" then you have a different issue than the one I suffered from, and again, like me, your problem is almost certainly not MC related as there would be a lot more noise on the forum if it were.

Did you try going in to device manager and uninstalling the drive, then reboot and let Windows redetect  and reinstall it?

Aside from that, I'm about out of ideas. Although my logs contained nothing pertaining to my problems, that doesn't mean to say yours won't, so it could also be worth enabling logging in MC "Help > Logging" try playing an audio disc, wait for it to fail, then post the last 20 to 40 lines  of the log file.
