on main machine i have files in playing now. on htpc it connects to main machine and is playing songs right now. if i goto playing now on main  and choose htpc under playing now it shows the playing now as empty. should it be empty? or showing me what is playing on the htpc now?

Sounds like maybe your htpc is setup as a DLNA renderer and your main as a controller.  Setup like that you'll see a playing now for the htpc, but that will be kinda like a local playing now on your main but for pushing to your htpc.  If you add tracks to the htpc playing now on the main it will them play out on the htpc.  If you add and play tracks directly on the htpc however that won't show up on the main.
