DLNA to OPPO - no sound with mkv
« on: September 24, 2010, 02:57:12 pm »

Hello,

I've been using TVersity to stream homemade MKV made with MakeMKV from original DVDs for a while and I decided to test MC's DLNA function with my OPPO blu ray player.

What I found great with MC is that I can jump to a specific timecode and resume from my OPPO but the problem I'm having is that I have no sound with that setup and I can't seem to find why

In MC's DLNA setup:

Audio: Never Convert
Video: Never Convert

The MKV:

---

Video
ID                               : 1
Format                           : MPEG Video

Format profile                   : Dolby Digital
Mode extension                   : CM (complete main)
Codec ID                         : A_AC3
Duration                         : 1h 33mn
Bit rate mode                    : Constant
Bit rate                         : 192 Kbps
Channel(s)                       : 2 channels
Channel positions                : Front: L R
Sampling rate                    : 48.0 KHz
Video delay                      : -66ms
Stream size                      : 128 MiB (3%)
Title                            : 2/0
Language                         : English

---

The catch is that if I use "convert to MPEG2/DVD stream" I get sound, but I lose the jump to timecode function and the video quality seems to be affected.

Is there a way to have sound and not to convert my stream?

Thanks in advance.

If you enable viewing of the "compression" field in MC, what does it look like for a video that won't play?

Hello Bob,

Where can I enable this?

BTW: I can stream video no problem, it's just that I can get my player to detect any audio.

Thanks.

I think compression is one of the tags.

For the audio problem, check under tools options/video what your audio setting is.

Hello,

compression is: mkv video (video: MPEG-2, audio: AC3)

Right now my audio setting is at: Default Windows Playback device with Digital connection to a surround sound receiver (AC3).

But this is where I'm confused. My PC is not physically connected to my Blu Ray player so these settings shouldn't matter... or do they?

My playback method is set to automatic.

Thanks for your time.

The codecs in the compression field are used to tell the player what it's getting via DLNA flags. There are a multitude of these and getting them the way specific devices want them is the trick to getting things playing.
I'm a little amazed that the Oppo can deal with the mkv container. Does it play standard mpeg2 files with ac3 audio?

My mkv(s) are working great with TVersity and Twonky two other DLNA servers that I tried with my Oppo. Like I said, If I enable convert to MPEG2/DVD stream in MC I get sound from my mkv but the picture quality is affected and I can't jump to a time code like I presently can in MC (without sound).

I'll try to look for an AVI file with ac3 and a VIDEO_TS folder and tell you what it does.

Thanks.

Looks like from your dump that the Oppo isn't using DLNA flags at all. In fact you can probably just turn the DLNA flag off in the advanced options and try it with uPnP only. It's possible that there are some extra upnp parameters required like sample rate.

If I turn off the DLNA flag in MC, I get a "the player does not support playback of this file." message from my Oppo.

Ok, thanks for checking. We'll see if adding more upnp info helps.

Do you have a short sample mpeg2/ac3 .mkv you can send me for testing?

Yes, I'll send you one. Because I tried the latest beta with the "DLNA server with more fields (if asked by the renderer) to upnp file directory info" and it didn't help.

Thanks.

Hello Bob,

Did you have a chance to look at the sample I sent you?

Thanks.

Yes,
I think it might require the audio sample rate. The latest build should be able to do this (128). If you load that version, right click on the sample file you sent me and do
library tools->update library from tags
it will rescan the file and should fill in the sample rate and channels fields (double check that it does on your machine).
Then try playing it on your oppo. I noticed that it isn't able to fill in the bit depth on my machine. We might have to make a guess on that if your oppo won't play without it.
On my machine, the sample rate gets filled in as 48000 (what you'd expect) and the channels get filled in as 2 (so it's not a 5+1 source).

Hello Bob,

I have some good news and some bad news :)

The good news is that it works, I now have some sound with my MKVs!.. the bad news is that I have to disable the DLNA options, therefor I'm losing the "go to" timecode functions that I was so much exited about...

Also, with DLNA disabled, I don't have the decoding artifacts I had with it enabled...

Anything else we could test?

Thanks again for your time.

The flags that signal the ability to seek by time or bytes are specific to DLNA. It's a bit odd that your device would just assume that it couldn't seek without the flags.

What exactly happens when the DLNA box is checked? (note that you probably should not check DLNAExtra with your device).

When the DLNA box is checked. I get a picture, but no sound. The "raison d'être" of this thread ;)

I also tried it with DLNAExtra not checked.

Thanks.

Ok, one more test, try it with the mpeg mimetype override checked and dlna checked.

Perhaps the next version (>15.0.159) will, it's got another change to the mimetype....

Bob,
When checking mimetype override, what exactly doe the mime type get overridden with?

Bob,
When checking mimetype override, what exactly doe the mime type get overridden with?
It seems that some devices (mostly TV's) say that they only accept MPEG2's but in reality they play other formats as well. So the mimetype override lies and says that all of the video media are MPEG2's.
