Are there soundcards and Soundcards..?
« on: November 23, 2010, 08:06:36 am »

As in much difference as to which one you use?

My Sony Viao has a Realtek high definition card installed, which isnt actually that bad when driving a pair of phones, certainly more than good enough for 192Kbs spotify tracks. In hi fi mode it's switched to s/pdif out and MC15 runs everything exclusively using wasapi event style through an optical cable into a dacmagic. Is there any benefit in 'upgrading' the soundcard, or is it simply chaging drivers to optimise it's optical output quality? The one thing that I am struggling to understand is how the clocking is handled at the data output side (i.e. in the PC) as I canot imagine it's remotely accurate, yet the SQ I am getting is incredible. Unless WASAPI event style means that the data is being buffered into the dacmagic and it is then reclocking the data as it pulls it into the DAC...?
