Yep.  That's probably the problem.  I can zoom here, on all of my video files.

What type of file is it?  How is it being played back?

It is all video files avi mkv mostly.

I am playing back with theater view on a 37 inch LCD screen.

I can also zoom the movies on my computer screen which is obviously smaller.

Tried Standard view and thats the same cant zoom out of letterbox view.

Also we use a mouse so when a movie is off screen we cant drag it back is there some way we can do this.

How about telling us the method of playback e.g. Automatic, directshow filters (including which filters), windows media player engine, quicktime etc. I'm pretty sure you should know where to look for this info by now.

Also, which graphics card? Check your driver settings and let applications have as much control as possible compared to the card's drivers.

It sounds like you might be running a specific output resolution with ffdshow, or overriding an application's (MC's) settings with your graphics card's drivers.

Finally, to recentre a zoomed or offset picture, use the OSD. While playing, use the up or down arrows repeatedly until you see the off-centre measures of the vertical and horizontal axes. Use the left and right arrows to adjust. You have to do this separately for horizontal and vertical.

Well I have not changed the system at all and it used to zoom.

Also I am not a tech nerd and need help to locate the info you need to help me.

I have updated CCCP

Filters used for MKV Haali Video Renderer ffdShow Audio Core avc Haali media splitter.

Filters for AVI Enhanced Video Renderer ffdhow audio ffdshow video windows acceleration is on. graphics card is Nvidia GEForce 9

Anything else I can check??

I think you might be hitting the weird zoom logic in MC's playback.  Yaobing, can you explain (again) how the zoom works?  I know there are certain circumstances where you can't zoom one way or the other, and we've discussed it before, but I don't remember the details.

I know it has something to do with the interaction of your screen resolution and the video's frame size.  Perhaps I'm wrong, but this could be related.

Hi maid - actually that tells us a fair bit - thanks!
Also, which operating system are you using?
Have you tried to change the video renderer from Haali to EVR?

So you're saying you can't make the pic bigger?.. e.g. for artificially reducing or eliminating black bars at top and bottom of widescreen cinemascope movies.

@glynor... maid should be able to do this. I certainly can just by using the scroll wheel in display view, and have always been able to do so.

I don't follow what you're saying here. We're talking about renderers - which will apply to all videos.... and since you're in XP, I believe EVR isn't available to you. Can you try VMR9? You may see tearing in the picture, but right now we're focusing on getting your zoom fixed.

What I see on my quad core i5 PC is that the more you zoom, the slower the playback becomes until it craps out like you describe. In my case a divx video was at abut 800-1000% when it happened. What are the specs (processor speeds) of your system? Could be that your system cannot handle high zooms. If a video is already at 264%... well it's already zoomed in, right?

At one time there was some weirdness with the zoom feature.  It could have been fixed a long time ago, but I remember times when I couldn't zoom.  My memory is that it was fixed after I discussed it with Yaobing, but then I have a vague recollection that I've noticed it again later.

I really can't be sure at all though.  My memory isn't clear and I can't seem to reproduce it either.  I can zoom my movies normally, though I'm on a very different system.

I have just tried EVR and no difference it is at 264% and when I scroll the mouse to 269% the screen goes black

If I'm not mistaken... I don't believe EVR works on Windows XP without significant hacking.  EVR is a render technology created for Vista, which I don't think was ever officially backported to Windows XP.  maid, try with your setup for AVI set to Automatic (at least the renderer setting).

More questions for you, I'm afraid:

When did you update CCCP? Before the problem started, or after?

What resolution is your TV? Is it 720p (usually 1366x768) or is it 1080p; please don't say it's 1080i - that just means it's a 720p set.

What resolution is your monitor - the one you say you can zoom in on? Just because the TV is physically bigger, it doesn't necessarily mean that the resolution is higher. For example, m 61" TV is 1920x1080, but my 24" monitors are 1920x1200.

Do you have both displays connected to your PC at the same time?

Ok, just so this is clear... did you connect the monitor to the HTPC and verified that zooming works, or is the monitor connected to a different computer on which you can zoom?

Different computer using HTPC library

If they're both running the same version of MC15, and the filters are configured the same (check that they are), then it can't be an MC15 problem, can it? Sorry if this is very obvious to you - you've probably already done this; if the filters are set up differently on the two machines, can you set up the HTPC to mimic the other PC (assuming hardware allows this)?

Ok Both machines are running the same version both have the same filters used.

I did howesver notice that on my office machine the widescreen movie is 180% zoom to full screen 238% and still veiwable scroll to 263% and it goes black.

It must have something to do with screen resolution but as I said it used to work we watched all widescreen movies in full screen mode

Can you do the following tests for me:

With the 1280 pixel wide movie (probably the mkv):
Can you confirm that it can go to full screen on your HTPC?
How much can you zoom before it goes black?

Do the same with the lower resolution avi and answer the same questions.

Right now my theory is that the 288 pixel high (?) avi video just requires too much scaling to fill your 1080p HTPC screen, but the higher res. movies will do just fine.

Also, and please don't take this the wrong way... it's difficult to understand your posts sometimes because of run-on sentences. That makes it hard to help you. The second sentence in your last post, for example, was the key sentence. However, it required re-reading several times, and mentally installing punctuation in different places until it eventually made sense. It's probably easy for you to decipher because you're the one writing it. Let's try to fix this zooming issue for you!

P.S. I assume you're running the latest available version of MC? If you "downgraded" to a previous version from a few weeks ago, does the problem disappear? Please do the above tests before going back MC versions, though.

Yaobing, can you explain (again) how the zoom works?

basically, we take the source rectangle and display it to an enlarged/reduced target rectangle.  In case of zooming in, the target rectangle is larger than the actual physical dimension of the display device.

But are there any limitations on when you can zoom in or out?  I remember that there was a time when you couldn't zoom an image smaller than 100% (or something like that).  I know that's not true anymore, but what limits are there now?

Re: Zoom

Zooming can reach as low as 48 pixels in height, and as high as 10 times the linear dimensions of display.  Therefore if a video's native size happens to be the same as the display's size, then zooming percentage can be as high as 1000% (10x).  As fitbrit has noted, you can not really reach the theoretical value before the computer is slowed down significantly.  However, that is the case when you zoom in significantly.  There should not be a problem to just zoom to fullscreen.

We have not changed zooming code for a long time.  It is therefore puzzling why maid is seeing a problem in recent builds.

Hi Fitbrit,

I am truly sorry about my punctuation.

1280x720 are already full screen
1280x544 is at 150 fit to screen, if I roll to 153 it will go black

I was a little hesitant in posting my previous suggestion.  However, there is no other explanation as we have not made any changes in zooming for a long time.

Even though you have not changed your video card, there can still be a number of possible changes on your computer that could cause problems.  For example:

- Your video driver could be automatically updated (if you have turned on Windows automatic update, or other software automatic update).

- Your video card's on board memory could have gone bad.

- Other part of your computer system may have changed.

If you like, you can try reverting back to an earlier build of MC (one that you believe was working properly) and see if the problem would go away.

Thank you thank you

It was the settings on the video card.

I tried everything else, then went to look at the nvidia setup, there I found a tv setup, ran that and walla all working again.

If you guys had not pointed me in that direction I would not have looked.

These things I do not meddle with.

Cheers again guys

From my first post above. Very glad you got it sorted.

These things are frustrating, especially when they're "spontaneous". The only good thing to come out of them is that hopefully we learn from them, and check one more possible culprit when things go awry the next time.
