sound is distorted after converting m4a to mp3
« on: December 18, 2010, 09:31:08 am »

Using MC version 15.0.167 to convert m4a to mp3 files appears to work OK. However, when playing the mp3 files, the sound is distorted. This is reflected by the levels (displayed in the Spectrum Analyser) being too high. The original m4a files play fine, i.e. without distortion and when I have used another file format converting program, the resulting mp3 files sound fine. However, I'd rather use MC15 to perform the conversions....

The settings being used are; File Conversion format = MP3 Encoder, Playback Method (for all file types) = Automatic.
What other settings should I check in MC15 ?
Thank you

You probably have some settings enabled in FFDSHOW (like the Volume adjuster or something similar).

MC uses your DirectShow filters to decode MP4 files so it matters what those settings are set to for ALL MP4 playback and transcoding.  Remember, M4A files ARE MP4 files.

I have a "clean" Profile in FFDSHOW that I use for transcoding.

I use the DC-Bass Source filter for splitting and decoding m4a files. It does not provide any DSP adjustments so it only decodes without altering the audio data anyhow.

I have the MP4 and MKV audio types set to use the ffdshow audio decoder (and AAC enabled in the ffdshow settings) so that I can use different audio settings when I play video files that have AAC encoded sound tracks.

Here are some instructions for configuring the DC-Bass Source filter: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=55606.msg377942#msg377942

The latest DC-Bass Source version (v. 1.3) is available e.g. in the Direct Show Filter Pack: http://reino.degeelebosch.nl/ .
I think MC installs it if it is not already installed, but the version may not be the latest (though I have not checked this recently).
