best place to store cover art?

My library & tags are meticulous but my cover art is a mess.

Cover art has never been of much importance to me but now I think I'd like to clean it up.

I notice that MediaCenter has two different schemes available for saving cover art:
  1. "Alongside" the media files
  2. In a dedicated folder

Mine, such as they are, are currently in a dedicated folder on my server. I must have selected this explicitly sometime a long, long time ago but I've neglected it since.

My question is simple... which scheme do you use and why? What are the various trade-offs for the two schemes?

I store them in a dedicated folder. I think this is a cleaner way to organize everything.
