Stream Music from MC (like Shoutcast)
« on: January 18, 2011, 11:01:25 am »

Hi

I'd like to stream the music from my local computer to the web, using MC15.

I'm aware of Gizmo and Webplay, but what i'd like is a stream, just like a webradio.

How would one achieve this ?

Thanks.

To answer your specific question:
File > Open URL...
=========================================================================================
For expanded information you can refer to the WIKI where you will find links to explicit instructions regarding the topics:
    * Web Media Radio,
    * Play a Web Media Station
    * Find Web Media Stations
    * Add and Save Web Media Stations
    * Add a Web Media Station to a Playlist
    * Proxy

See: http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Web_Media_%28Radio%29

Advanced
And, if you want to really get serious about it you can use a packet sniffer for the purposes described below.  While there are many easily obtained packet sniffers you will have a difficult time trying to locate one specifically designed for filtering the URL's for online audio streams.URL Snooper is one designed for that purpose and is the one I use. Go to wikipedia.org and type in URL Snooper and you will see its home page. The designer best describes its function.
Many links to streaming audio and video that you come across on the web are hidden behind Javascript or Activex scripts. Because of this, it is sometimes very difficult to figure out the actual URLs that correspond to the streams being played.
URL Snooper provides easy solution to finding the URLs for all streams by watching network traffic and identifying potential URLs, especially streaming media URLs.

You can use Icecast + Edcast Standalone for that. Icecast is the actual server and Edcast Standalone is a "client" that streams everything that is played on the PC to the server. The server can be installed on the same PC that plays music. Both programs are free and they do not consume lots of resources.

The Edcast Standalone program is no more available at the old official site (oddsock.org), but fortunately someone has decided to continue the development: http://users.tpg.com.au/radiorio/

I use the Edcast standalone to stream a professional signal. It's rock solid.

Thanks the the updated link, Alex.

Thanks a lot for your contributions.

I have succeed setting up a stream, but had to use a sound cable from my stereo to line in my soundcard, actually streaming the line in.
Quite tricky, as shoutcast could stream directly from the source (winamp)

I have read some lietterature (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=24691.0) and got Write Playing plugin to use metadata.

Just a rough start so far. Will keep you posted.

Thanks guys

Did you get anything new on this?  It seems with all the APIs and SDKs available for MC, there should be a way to write a plugin that does this.  I remember once upon a time MC supported Winamp plugins, but I guess no more... it'd be really nice to send just a stream directly from the player, not everything playing on the machine.

Icecast + Edcast Standalone should work. I noticed that the link in my previous reply is dead, but after some searching I found a new address: http://users.tpg.com.au/rioradio/

A late reply to jahmika: It isn't necessary to use a cable, but the configuration of the Icecast server and Edcast Standalone is not exactly easy. You can find links to some old instructions here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=47611.msg326427#msg326427
