Backup HW/SW

So, any suggestions?

I'm currently using Mozy home but they are about to jump me from about $5 a month to nearly $20.  I'm using syncback to a usb drive now.  I think I would like this method better if I was using 2.5" disks and didn't have to futz with wall warts.

Leaning towards Backblaze for online backups but that will take a bit of time (weeks) to complete.

What and how much are you trying to backup? eg
- 5 Win 7 PC's and an additional
- 5 TB of Media

1 PC.  The amount varies.  I would probably only chuck 250GB on the online backup.  Closer to 1TB to the local.

Leaning towards 1 of these and backblaze...

I like simple, cheap and resilient.

I would buy two 2 TB drives (one WD and one Seagate) plus two external USB/e-Sata enclosures (Vantec NextStar3 is the best in my opinion), plus some backup software (I like Super Flexible File Synchronizer). Total cost should be about $270.

Back everything up to each drive, store them in different locations, and don't leave them powered on. Now you have 3 copies of your data; on drives from different manufacturers in case one has a defect; you are covered from theft/fire because they are in different locations; you don't need to worry about a lightning strike because they are unplugged when not in use; you are not dependent on the internet or the survival of a company; and you've got spare capacity for another TB of data.

If you are wanting online storage why not just use a web hosting company, you will have more control
over access to your files and you can use their back-up service to make a back-up of your back-up.
As far as that goes any host worth it's salt has built in redundancy.

The company I have been with for 5+ years is offering unlimited space/bandwidth starting at 2.95/mo.
Great company, never had a problem that wasn't quickly resolved.

I do what you're leaning toward except the online. I back up nightly the data from my laptop to my NAS using SyncBackSE. Then weekly I use a portable USB drive to back up my NAS again with SyncBackSE and that drive is stored offsite. I've thought about online but just haven't done it yet.

Another vote for SyncBackSE.  Been using it for years.  I back up internally to a separate drive on my server and weekly to a FreeNAS ftp server that I installed at the office for regular offsite backups (for free).
