Arrgh!!

Man that sux!

I just re-imported my music collection and for some stupid reaon I selected "get info from directory/filename".
(I did this because some of my tracks have no tags)
I also had "ignor tags" UNselected.

Well anyway. I didn't notice at first that the tag info WAS ignored.

I then selected all the files and used the find replace tool to remove underscores.

Here's the killer: I clicked save to leave the File Properties dialogue, with "Update changed files" selected.

Then bang! 2000 files updated!
-Oh No!

I check my "various artists" albums. -and yep, they all now have the artist as the title of the album.
Doh!

Is this behaviour of MJ correct?

(or am I a bigger fool than I already think?)

It sounds like any file from which an underscore was removed would have qualified as a "changed" file.
I know it won't make you feel any better, but that seems right.

How come your're re-importing?
What version?

MJ8 has some powerful tagging renaming tools that might bring things back to scratch.
Sometime that has to be done in a couple of moves - like use the tags to rename the files in a cetain way then use the filenames to update the tags in a second round manoeuvre.

Perhaps even better, got any backups?

Is there a wway to use CDDB without actual CD's?

ie: query it to find the artists of my "various artists" albums?

I don't know of a way to utilise CDDB in that way but a couple of recent threads have alluded to a possible way, or a way in the future, or requested such a way or something.
Do a search of recent threads.

PS:
I just noticed that if you are in the File Properties dialogue there is, under Tools, an option to "Get Information from CDDB".  Try that.

I actually found it, just before I read your post.
I have tried using it but it doesn't put the track artist and album artist in the right places.

Also I have to do it one file at a time.

If you are not using MJ8, "File and MP3 Renamer" does batch processing of file names and MP3 tags so it might be useful. I can be downloaded from:
