MJ clicking on track selection / and next track...
« on: June 06, 2002, 05:34:27 am »

When selecting a track in MJ8 I get a minor click... this is bearable but not desriable...

But sometimes when playing an album (playback is always gapless) i will also get a click as one track goes into the next.. I have noticed this most often when going from track one to track two...

Is this a bug or feature ?? Can the feature be turned off ??

In gapless mode, if the two tracks don't line up well, there could be a little click.  Does it happen between all tracks, and does it matter what's playing on either side? (silence/silence vs music/music)

Thanks PhatPhreddy.

Well I get it sometimes but I have also had it with some burns too and this make the burnt CD a coaster and so is a PITA...

The thing is the click is not like its a minor recording click its like an application click (and IIRC the playing now screen does a refresh) and is exactly the same as ablum selection...

All my listening is album listening (lots of DJ mix albums and my style of listening is album rather than track) and so i have not tested the system of gaps with MJ... Everything is gapless in playback..

This leads me onto my next question which is how to do OBF (one big file) recording of my CD's and make an APL from the cuesheet... A new thread beckons..

So can I assume this is a bug then rather than a feature that could be turned off ?

I think you can conclude that we don't know.  It's unlikely now that it is an MJ bug or we'd be deluged with complaints.  It could be a sound card problem.  What kind of soundcard?

I'm assuming that it isn't just when you click a wireless mouse.

When you play a poppy CD does it always pop in the same place? Does it pop when you play it using something other than MJ (like a regular audio CD player)?

It is only ever when changing from one track to another... it is not a pop on the recording from DOA and it does not always happen in the same repeatable fashion...

IIRC (and I am not near my MJ machine now) when selecting a album (or track) via mouse you get a confirm click as you select it...

What I am finding is I get the exact same click when albums finish track one and start track two... (it may be happening more but this is where I have noticed it most) this may have something to do with not having a silence gap etc...

One thing that _may_ be a clue is that the now playing screen does a (fast) refresh when this click happens... This makes sense when selecting an album (it has to refresh the now playing screen) but not when going from T1 to T2..

This is with an onboard AC97 soundcard not nice but there you go... My M-Audio card is currently is a swap out build that has been held up on parts in the mail !!

If you switch to some other screen, so the screen doesn't refresh, or if you minimize, do you still hear the problem?

I'm thinking interrupt sort of problem.  My video card introduces a sound artifact when slideshow plugin changes the slide (on one of my machines).

Hi PhatPhreddy,

The click you mention is audible through your soundcard for each track change ?
You said it sounds like an application click, so when in playing now are you in track info mode ?

If so, you shall check the sound property associated with the "Windows explorer/start navigation" event
in Windows Configuration panel/sounds properties. Ensure it is set to "none".

I had a similar problem before. As the track info page is refreshed for each track change,
the "start navigation" event is triggered and the associated sound played. (it was
a slight click by default on my system)

It might not been the case for you but in the case it could help !

let us know

OK like all intermittant faults I cant make it happen now !!!

I think you could be right on that windows sounds angle as it is precisely the same style / volume sound as I get from explorer following a link on another machine but it is not set that way on this one !!!

Will report what I can make happen

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you Cmagic - I could do anything for you (well almost anything!). I had the same problem (actually posted a message here last year about it- but didn't get any response). That darn 'start navigation' was doing it evey time. Now I don't have people asking me why it clicks everytime it goes to a new track. Awesome - thanks again!!!!
