some subtitle formats not showing up on clients
« on: April 15, 2011, 07:54:02 pm »

ive noticed that about 40% of my foreign films will not show subtitles on the client machines, but on the server all subtitles show up.

Any Ideas Why?
Thanks

As there are several types of subtitles:

One Idea:  If you "clients" are just playing the files from the server.... I'm guessing that the filter setup you have between you server and the clients is different (or has different options selected), and one (or more) types of subs are hence not showing on the clients.

Another Idea:  If the Server is transcoding them and then streaming it to the client, then ffmpeg (which is used to do the transcoding) either does not like one type of subs, or the stream is not being selected.

You can use a prog like MediaInfo to tell you what streams are in each file and you may then be able to narrow down if it is a type of sub giving you issues.

jmone, thanks for reply. the way i have it setup is all clients type in access key, then they download the 22mb file from server, and then the whole library is loaded.

Where do i go to check this?

I've grabbed the subtitle file. may i upload this .srt file?
Just an FYI. i've done a search in jriver for all .srt files(subtitled movies) and they all show subs on server. so we know server is playing them all fine.

For starters grab the direct show info from both the server where it is playing correctly and a client and post the info here.  This will let us know how the media files are being loaded, what they contain and any differences in the playback between the two PCs.  To get the infi, start playing the file, right click, copy to clipboard, paste the info here.

Appreciate your replies and help jmone,
2 things to note...
1. when right clicking display on server it shows stream selection and all clients do not show that!
2. on server under directshow filters it shows these highlighted.
a. default directsound device
b.enhanced video renderer
c.Directvobsub(forced auto loading version)
d. select filters
e. copy graph info to clipboard

On client it only shows these highlighted
a. enhanced video renderer
b. select filters
c. copy graph info to clipboard
Server copy - playing martyrs with subs and they show up

OK - you are using a different splitter on each of the PC's.  The std windows one on the Server is presenting three streams, Audio, Video & Subs - on the HTPC you are using the Nero splitter is not presenting a subtitle stream.  You can try changing the splitter if you can on the HTPC.

Second comment is you are using MC to stream the file from the Server to the HTPC.  I do not know if MC presents the external SRT subs as a part of this stream, but others could comment.  To get around the issue of what is supported or not, I do the following two things on my Client PCs (still connecting using Library Server)
1) Tools --> Options --> Media Network --> Client Options --> check "Play local file of one that matches Library Server file is found"
2) Make sure all PC's (inlcuding the Server) can "see" the same Path/FileName as the sever and that the library uses these paths, eg:
Map the media drives as somehting like the "M:" drive on each PC so to M:\Video\.....  etc etc OR
Map using UNC so that all PC's use \\SERVER\Video\.... etc etc

This way you still LOAD the library on client PC's from the server but you PLAY each file as it was locally connected.

Hey Jmone... Thanks again for your help with this!!!
I've checked clients - they all have - Tools --> Options --> Media Network --> Client Options --> check "Play local file of one that matches Library Server file is found" Checked\Ticked

Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this... Where\how do i change this please?

If that doesnt work. then i will give up totally on all future issues\questions with jriver until i get a server solution.
JRiver obviously has lots of problems with those of us who have a large amount of drives and don't have servers yet, and connect to server libraries.

so far my issues being i dont have a server\nor enough room to map (due to windows 26 letter drive limit)
include:
1. no dvd files play
2. some files are missing
2. no subs play
4. all flash vids are cutoff.

Will Await your reply, before i touch anything else. This conversion\splitter stuff is new to me.

I've not got any more advice to what we covered last year on the way to do drive mapping etc http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=57403.0

On the DirectShow Filter side of the house have a read of this the thread (and the linked wiki page).  The "splitter" is very important as it is the filter that lookes into a file and determins what streams are there and then passes them to the various decoders.  I like LAV Splitter so you may want to give it a go.
