Author Topic: Theater & 3D Views are Black on SandyBride Onboard Graphics  (Read 2629 times)

I built out a new Win 7 Ultimate 64bit, Sandy Bridge i7 2600S MC 16 box using the OnChip graphics (no separate graphics card).  The box has 8GB of memory and plenty of disk space.

When I select Theater or 3D View, the screen is just empty with blank/black area until I switch to another view.

Does anyone have any ideas why Theater and 3D view are BLACK ?

Thanks much,
Tim

I have Win 7 SP1 installed and all of Windows updates including latest Intel HD Graphics Driver.

I tried YouTube which requires Flash, installed Flash and YouTube works fine, but still have BLACK for Theater & 3D Views in MC16.

The problems in this cases is almost always GPU drivers or DirectX problems.

If you are absolutely certain you have the newest GPU driver, then I would install a new DirectX version first. Is that is not helping, you have to update the GPU driver. Go on Intels own pages, find the Motherboard brand and download the drivers for this specific card/gpu).

This is a bug with the Intel video drivers.  Media Center 16.0.81 contains a workaround, and can be downloaded from the top of this board.

I had 16.0.75 installed and upgraded to 16.0.81, rebooted and the same BLACK screens still happen.

If I go into 3D mode and start to shrink the size of the MC16 window, I start to see part of the word "Click" in the upper left hand corner written in white letters.  When I shrink the window smaller, the obfuscated white characters go away.  This was also happening with 16.0.75.

Any other ideas ?

Thanks,
Tim

Could you look in a log after showing Theater View (Help > Logging), and find this text:
CDXCore::Initialize

Then, report the Adapter, VendorId, and DeviceId listed below that in the log?

Thanks.

Here you go.  Let me know if you need any additional information.

Turned on Logging, went into Theater and 3D View, then opened current log:

Try changing the option under Tools/Options/General/Video Card/Custom.  Change "full screen anti-aliasing" to none.

Thanks for the log.

Other SandyBridge chips with this problem are a DeviceId of 290.  Your device is 258.

A coming build of Media Center will disable anti-aliasing automatically for both.

Jim's post above should get you running in the meantime.

Thanks again.

Thanks Matt and JimH, that did the trick for both TheaterView and 3D.

I was waiting for the 2600S 65watt TDP chip for a while and it never surfaced on NewEgg or other sites.  Ended up getting one from Japan on EBay.  I was a little hesitant about using the on-chip graphics, but it works great for both Theater, 3D and Theater-Showroom.

Again, thanks much for the quick response and fix.

Sincerely,
Tim

P.S.  Who needs Sonos, Sooloos, PeachTree, etc. when you can have JRMC16 and user upgradeable hardware !!!

Did the following address the issue?

"Try changing the option under Tools/Options/General/Video Card/Custom.  Change "full screen anti-aliasing" to none."

I have my graphics settings on "low" so it is disabled by default.

Another problem I am having is that theater view is improperly sized after I resume from standby. In some cases it is overscanned badly, other times it shows up underscanned.

That's probably because of handshake issues over HDMI. If you try to turn on your TV and receiver a while before powering on the HTPC, then it will probably be fine. This has been a pretty annoying thing for me for a long time now, but I think I'll be able to work around it with a macro remote control that turns on the TV and receiver a few seconds before the HTPC.

In addition, I'm getting Direct Draw 3d errors now when I exit out of theater view, according to madVR.
