Media Center 16.0.86 -- Available Here
« on: May 10, 2011, 09:44:26 am »

This is the latest version of MC 16.  Please post bugs here.  Please start a new thread for anything requiring discussion.  Non-bug posts will be deleted or moved.

More on Update Channels

Update: Run Media Center and check for updates or
Download: http://files.jriver.com/mediacenter/channels/v16/latest/MediaCenter160086.exe

16.0.86 (5/9/2011)

1. Fixed: Downloaded television was being treated like recorded television with respect to the roller options and file caption display in Theater View.
2. Changed: Added media sub type 'Adult'.
3. Changed: Simplified the play options provided for movies in Theater View.
4. Changed: When using DSP Studio > Output Format with the option 'Move center to front L/R' enabled, simulated center sound (like from JRSS) will not be folded into the front speakers.
5. Changed: The new build update system keeps the last 5 builds (in AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 16\Install).
6. Changed: When watching a video from Theater View in a list of videos where the series is the same (and not empty) for all the videos, the entire set of files will be played so that previous / next can be used to switch episodes.
7. Changed: Added support for Library Server client to the Print Wizard.
8. Changed: The Print Wizard shows a blank image (black frame with failure message inside) if it fails to load one of the images queued for printing (previously missing files would be removed from the queue).
9. Changed: Http server: always return Partial Content for Byte Range requests. Fixed problem with Onkyo receiver when acting as a DLNA renderer.
10. Fixed: In Theater View, entering the 'Television' view and leaving would not preserve the root roller selection 'Television'.
11. SDK: Added MCWS/v1/File/Rotate function to allow rotating images (requires an authenticated connection).
12. NEW: Added the ability to rotate images from a Library Server client (requires an authenticated connection).
13. Fixed: In some cases, deletion of television shows from a Library Server client would not remove disk files on the server.
14. Fixed: Performing an upgrade of a portable installation could cause thumbnails to be deleted.
15. Changed: DirectShow filters needed for video conversions are downloaded at program install/update time if video conversion has been performed in the past.
16. Fixed: Pausing time-shifted television playback and then pushing the Green Button would unexpectedly unpause playback.
17. Fixed: The Tag Action Window would show a non-functional maximize button when minimized.

16.0.85 (5/6/2011)

1. Changed: Tuned media sub type guessing.

16.0.84 (5/6/2011)

1. NEW: Automatic configuration of ffdshow decoder options for DirectShow video playback. First draft, more to come.
2. Changed: Simplified connection type in Options > Video > Audio > Connection Type, and use this information when auto-configuring filters.

16.0.83 (5/6/2011)

1. Changed: Made a few tweaks to DSP Studio > Room Correction to make calibrating with the new 'Level' tool easier.
2. Changed: In cases where the subwoofer channel is created using JRSS Subwoofer, bass redirection 'Move bass to subwoofer' will be treated like 'Remove bass'.
3. Changed: Revised wording for DSP Studio > Output Format > Subwoofer.
4. Fixed: Added special case handling for another Intel GPU that doesn't properly support full screen anti-aliasing.
5. Changed: Removed 'Check For Updates' from Start Menu (now integrated into program).
6. Changed: Improvements to the new check for updates system.

16.0.82 (5/5/2011)

1. Changed: Checking 'Solo' in DSP Studio > Room Correction clears the solo state for any other channels.
2. Changed: Picking 'Mute' or 'Solo' in DSP Studio > Room Correction could unexpectedly change the channel level in certain cases.
3. Changed: Put the 'Distance' section on top of the 'Level' section in DSP Studio > Room Correction, and added a note that distances should be set first.
4. Changed: The pink noise test tone generated by DSP Studio > Room Correction for a subwoofer has a 100 Hz lowpass filter so that high frequencies will never be sent to the subwoofer.
5. Fixed: DV video in an AVI container was failing to convert for Android when LAV splitter was installed on system.
6. NEW: Added 'Level' checkbox to DSP Studio > Room Correction tools.  It plays a tone suitable for level calibration out a single speaker.
7. Changed: Tones played by DSP Studio > Room Correction are -12 dB so that there's room for level adjustment without concern over clipping (since the level tool temporarily disables clip prevention).
8. NEW: Started framing in an improved 'Check for updates' system.

16.0.81 (5/4/2011)

1. Fixed: Viewing the files inside a Netflix series in Theater View was not possible with the last few builds.
2. NEW: The optical drive entry in Theater View can be configured to only show when certain disk types are in the drive.
3. Changed: Revised default Theater View layout so that DVD and Blu-ray discs appear under video, and audio discs appear at the root (if there's a disc in the drive).
4. Changed: It is possible to browse optical disks using Theater View > Gadgets > Explorer.
5. Changed: Revised default Theater View layout (resetting of views is strongly recommended for users of builds 76 - 80, but optional).
6. Changed: Theater View will update when an optical disc is added or removed (instead of requiring a manual refresh).
7. Changed: Inserting or removing an optical disc does a less disruptive update to views that are not related to optical discs.
8. Changed: Removed 'Play All' Theater View top roller option at the root of a video library view and playlists view.
9. Fixed: Playlist deletion was disabled in Theater View for the last few builds.
10. Changed: Netflix entries under the "Television" category now group TV episodes into series, as in the instant queue.
11. Changed: Improved support for XMLTV genre parsing.
12. Fixed: Ctrl+O in a web view would show an IE open dialog instead of Media Center's options when using the Internet Explorer engine.
13. Fixed: Installing new versions of existing filters wasn't working during android video conversions.
14. Fixed: Theater View Weather would not properly display Weather icons in some cases.
15. Changed: Added media sub type 'Short'.
16. Changed: Revised how filter detection is performed so that the filter is not loaded when testing if it exists on the system.
17. Fixed: m4a audio file tagger could not remove embedded cover art.
18. Fixed: m4a audio file tagger would not remove disk # and track # fields from the file.
19. Changed: Theater View configuration no longer limits adding multiple of the same type of item (i.e. adding a plugin in more than one place, etc.).
20. NEW: Added the ability to create Theater View navigation items that point to particular playlist groups instead of the root of playlists.
21. Changed: When a television recording is being deleted by user, MC will no longer keep the underlining time-shifting files if the only other reference to these files is the "Saved time-shifting".

16.0.80 (5/3/2011)

1. SDK: MJZoneAutomation::GetName() was not working properly in certain cases.
2. Changed: When editing Smartlist rules, only relevant values are presented in the rule drop boxes (previously relevant values were shown, then a divider, then a list of all values).
3. Optimized: Starting video playback is faster in some cases.
4. Fixed: Determining the type of optical disk in the drive could cause a handle leak on Windows 7 with certain optical drives.
5. Changed: Improved how optical disks are detected (should be an internal change, but please report any issues).
6. Fixed: Television component did not handle error conditions properly in the last few builds.
7. Fixed: Television component could crash if the tuner device failed in the last few builds.
8. Changed: Dutch language translation updated (thanks bennyd).
9. NEW: Added 24 bit transcode to wave audio option for the DLNA server.

16.0.79 (5/2/2011)

1. Changed: Added media sub type option of 'Other'.
2. Fixed: Playback of mono video files would not work properly in some cases.
3. Fixed: Returning to Theater View could crash (only applies to last couple builds).
4. Changed: Improved Television views in Theater View to work better for users that don't record their television (sorting by date imported instead of date recorded, addition of season view, addition of genre view, etc.)
5. Changed: Renamed 'My Computer' to 'Explorer' (applies to Standard View and Theater View).
6. Fixed: In Theater View, when certain confirmation boxes were shown, it would be possible to arrow the focus out of the dialog.
7. Fixed: If a background thread showed a message box while Theater View was showing, it would be skinned by Theater View but then not work properly.
8. Changed: Numerous enhancements to the automatic media sub type guessing system used for video categorization in Theater View (remember you can manually set the Media Sub Type for files that are incorrectly categorized).
9. Fixed: Connecting to a library via DLNA could hang.
10. NEW: Options > Theater View > Theme > Fadeout Cover Art In Playing Now Display is a three-state option: No / Only for online media slideshow (recommended) / Always
11. Changed: New stock views for Theater View (requires one time over-write of user customization).
12. Faster: Improved performance of Theater View library views.
13. Changed: Removed edge fading from Theater View online slideshow images (since they're now cropped to fill the entire screen).

16.0.78 (4/29/2011)

1. Changed: Default video sorting is by name instead of date / name.
2. Changed: Tuned default thumbnail size in Theater View slightly to show 3 wide instead of 2 wide in movie views on a 720p display.
3. Changed: When using a secondary roller in Theater View, returning from a view will preserve the focus and selection state of the secondary roller.
4. Changed: Merged standard and alternate Theater View navigation modes, and removed advanced Theater View option to toggle (the differences were subtle anyway).
5. Changed: When using 'Same as source' for the bitdepth for MP3 and M4A, the output will be 24-bit instead of 64-bit (choosing a higher bit depth manually is still supported).
6. Changed: Added 16-bit output as one of the audio auto-configure formats to try when failing to open a soundcard.
7. NEW: Theater View scrollbar sizing is user-configurable in Options > Theater View.
8. Fixed: Theater View list style customization was not saving the category and file level independently.
9. Changed: New stock views for Theater View (sorry, will require reconfiguration of user customization).
10. NEW: Added 'Decade' as one of the date formatting options for the FormatDate(...) expression function.

Worked like a champ for me.

A nice improvement would be if the updater told you what version it was downloading.

Worked fine here from my office system (using my newly purchased MC16 license for the office)  Thanks!  This new auto-update system will be MUCH more convenient for updating the systems that run our video wall.  That and the new Theater View improvements are what motivated me to update from MC15 here.

"1. NEW: Automatic configuration of ffdshow decoder options for DirectShow video playback. First draft, more to come."
Maybe related to above as my video playback went broke after upgrading. I want to use LAV cuvid / CoreAVC to decode h264 videos but now ffdshow always automaticallly re-enables and therefore steals h264 decoding for itself.

Media center work great, sound is rich and better of Foobar.

I'm find one small bug.

In "Options/CD&DVD/Auto rip CD database Lookup options" don't work option "If multiple matches are found, choose the first one". If I choose this option, Media Center still asks the match to choose.

It's problem if you rip entire CD colection.

Best Regards,
Ivan

16.0.87 - Last.fm tracks added through Play Doctor all show up as 'Last.fm Track' in the Playlist, with no Artist or Album info. Track info shows up when the track starts playing. Tracks still scrobble properly.

It was doing this in .81 and .86 as well.

Oh how I seriously crave serious automation.  Like how MC does the whole update on its own.  I had to click GO but that was it.  I'll enjoy updates as they get pulled down, with less distraction.

Really nice work on theater view!  Some of the updates may be from a few versions ago (don't keep up as well as I could).  Still thinking the option to default to a central choice in theater view would be good:

Gadgets - Playlists - [[[Audio]]] - Video - Images - Exit

Half the clicks to choose an option, on average.

1) When tagging in Action Window > Tag, I enter a value for a field than press tab to go to the next field. The first file is selected.

This seems to happen mostly when I first navigate to an area and only once.
This seems to happen mostly when I have nothing selected in the file list but I have it happened when I have multiple files selected.

2) This might be related to the above bug. This happens when tagging in Action Window > Tag, last pane is using an expression field (format= YEAR: ALBUM). Selecting an item in the last pane and editing the album field. In the pane, the item is deselected and in the file list area all items from the last pane is shown with the first file selected. Normally the last pane gets unselected but the file from the previous selected items are shown. This happens semi-rarely.

3) Using the Rename, Move, & Copy files, files are correctly named, when a folder name ends in a period. Trying to rename files will cause an error because it will try to put a period at the end of a folder.

Example: MC will try and rename the following
C:\R.E.M\Document\(01) R.E.M. - Finest Worksong.flac

to

C:\R.E.M.\Document\(01) R.E.M. - Finest Worksong.flac

BUG: Rear Speakers with "Clone sides channels to rear speakers" dont work when output via WASAPI Event Style, used to work perfectly in past builds, with directsound all is perfect

EDIT: must be a thing with the order of speakers that was changed recently, if I select 7.1 as output there is sound in the speakers

THe 'Latest' update options at startup works fine on the pc, but with a portable installation, the installation must be done manualy :
if it is done inside mc (portable), the program prompts to restart, but it is the mc installed localy on the pc that restarts ( even if no server is running on background).
Launching the portable program starts the update again and again.

Couple of bugs...

1. I have my Harmony 1 remote set up to replicate a MCE remote. The activity "Watch TV" calls the "Guide" button, which is supposed to switch to Theater View > Television. Worked perfectly in v15 and early v16, but not since Theater View Scheme has changed. Now it simply goes back to Theater View home screen.

2. If watching TV, then Stop, get taken back to Live TV screen (whereas it used to go back to the last screen I was in). Once back in top roller, cannot scroll in either direction. Screen refreshes (as if command recvd) but screen remains on Live TV. This is just a simple left/right direction thing, no fancy command...

Smartlist bug: Actually saw this in previous builds. When creating a smartlist, if I try to add Style or Keyword as a rule, none of the values in my database are available in the dropdown list.

I had a big playlist created with some dupes (I queued up Epic - Choral and then Epic - 5 Star smartlists) and when I went to resume playback after upgrading to .87 I played song #88 (where the playlist was at) and the playlist window scrolled up to show song #15 (they are the same track).

Also, I've noticed that sometimes if I am in another program and then click in the MC window directly on a keyword for the song it will check it, but if I move to another song and then go back to it the change won't have been saved.

An update to the Theater View "Activity" issue...

It seems none of my programmed activities are working correctly.

These are simply mapped to MCE remote buttons that MC is mapped to...

You can get 16.0.87 by:

1) Installing 16.0.86
2) Selecting 'Latest' as the update channel in Options > Startup
3) Checking for updates (Help menu in the program)

Let us know how the updater works for you.

Thanks.

So that's what that was!  Nice!  Much better than uploading and installing.
Question: Will future versions automatically update in this manner?  If so, will the latest version be available for download?  I like keeping the latest ver. in a backup folder.  I don't see v 16.0.87 available for download.

YEp the updater works OK, I am on Win7 x64 (just in case  ;) )

Now:
1- How come update gives me 16.0.87 and here last is 86?
2- Where is the changelog for 87?
3- It would be NICE that after auto update changelog should pop up like a readme or something.....

Nice work Guys  :)

Press Maximize in Tag pane. It fills whole left pane. But triangle on button (now called Restore) still points to top. But it is expected to have it change direction and point to bottom.

Hello Jim / Matt,

It looks like MC16.0.87 is back to leaving MP3s in the cache and then adding them to the library server as stacks to my FLACs.  I playing files on a client over the internet, and converting to MP3s from FLACs.

Thanks,
Doug

I just wanted to bring this video audio playback device issue to your attention:

In my system the new update scheme doesn't allow a portable install. The Media Center 16.exe in the portable folder starts an installation program which updates (or reupdates) the normal install, and I've found no way to complete a working portable install, except installing an old build (81).
I'm afraid that my description is not clear...  ? If so let me know and I'll try to explain better

2. Changed: When editing Smartlist rules, only relevant values are presented in the rule drop boxes (previously relevant values were shown, then a divider, then a list of all values).

How is this better?  If I want to add an artist to a smartlist that has artist plus album as its rule, only the "relevant" choices are shown so no new artist can be added.  This doesn't seem helpful.

What ever changes were made it has become harder to create rule, when adding a 2nd rule the tags I can pick is always empty. I have to pick "contains" and then type the value then switch to "is", "is not any", etc...

I just started Media Center & was presented with a demand that I must update in order to use it.  So I downloaded the new version. Now all my playlists are gone as are my libraries.  How can I reconnect with my past?

Normally, the update will use your existing library.  Maybe you uninstalled?  Please use another thread.  This one is for reporting bugs.

There seems to be a bug with marking videos as watched.

If I'm in Theater View and watch a show up to the very end, it doesn't get marked as watched. If I stop it seconds before it actually ends, it does get marked as watched. Not sure if the same thing happens in standard view, as I don't use it much.

Also, it would be great if you could mention a way we can manually set videos as watched in our collections. Thanks!

No, I should have been clearer. I'm actually referring to standard video files; they show a tick if they've been watched, in the new Theater View.

Like the new update feature. But if you have installed a portable version and a standard version installed on the same machine and you start the portable version, the update will be done for the standard version only. With every launch of the portable version the update will be installing again and the story begins from the top.

I'm having problems playing mp4 (aac) audio files over library server. I've transferred the files to my local computer and they play fine (I'm using LAV Splitter and LAV Audio), but when I play them over the server they sound really distorted. I've tried using the input plug-ins and different filters with the same result.

FIXED: There is a problem when encoding AAC to be sent over the library server. The solution is to install the DC-BASS splitter http://www.dsp-worx.de/?n=15 and select that as the AAC/MP4 source splitter on the server.

I think I've actually found a bug that maybe hasn't been mentioned...

When doing a 'Rename' through MC, the filename rule (expression) is used appropriately, but the Directories rule is not for hidden stacked files. i.e. I did a rename (Directory and Filename) of a large group and the lower (stacked) file was renamed for the filename, but not relocated to the new folder location.

Example:  I had changed; [album] from "Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time" to "500 Greatest Songs of All Time", [myseries] from <empty> to "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" and [myseriesvolume] from <empty> to "001-100".

upper level of stack (m4a):
M:\[D]\Assorted\500 Greatest Songs of All Time\001-100\28 - 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - 001-100 - Otis Redding - (Sitting On) The Dock Of The Bay.m4a

lower level of stack (mp3):
M:\[D]\Assorted\Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time\28 - 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - 001-100 - Otis Redding - (Sitting On) The Dock Of The Bay.mp3

Notice that on the lower level of the stack, the directory is the old [album] and the filename picks up on the [myseries] and [myseriesvolume].

I didn't know if you needed the directory & filename expressions or not, so here they are.

Directory expression:
if(isequal([Media Type],Audio,8),if(isequal([MySeries],unknown,8),[artist]\[album],[artist]\[MySeries]\[MySeriesVolume]),if(isequal([artist],Multiple Artists,8),if(isequal([MySeries],unknown,8),if(isequal([name],folder,8),Assorted\[album],Assorted\[album]\Art),if(isequal([name],folder,8),Assorted\[myseries]\[myseriesvolume],Assorted\[myseries]\[myseriesvolume]\Art)),if(isequal([myseries],unknown,8),if(isequal([name],folder,8),[artist]\[album],[artist]\[album]\Art),if(isequal([name],folder,8),[artist]\[myseries]\[myseriesvolume],[artist]\[myseries]\[myseriesvolume]\Art))))

File Name expression:
if(isequal([media type],audio,8),if(isequal([disc #],unknown,8),if(isequal([myseries],unknown,8),[track #] - [album] - [artist] - [name],[track #] - [myseries] - [myseriesvolume] - [artist] - [name]),[disc #].if(isequal([myseries],unknown,8),[track #] - [album] - [artist] - [name],[track #] - [myseries] - [myseriesvolume] - [artist] - [name])),if(isequal([disc #],unknown,8),if(isequal([artist],multiple artists,8),if(isequal([MySeries],unknown,8),if(isequal([name],folder,8),[name],[album] - /(VA/) - [name]),if(isequal([name],folder,8),[name],[myseries] - [myseriesvolume] - /(VA/) - [name])),if(isequal([MySeries],unknown,8),if(isequal([name],folder,8),[name],[artist] - [album] - [name]),if(isequal([name],folder,8),[name],[artist] - [myseries] - [myseriesvolume] - [name]))),if(isequal([artist],multiple artists,8),if(isequal([MySeries],unknown,8),if(isequal([name],folder,8),[name] /(CD[disc #]/),[album] /(CD[disc #]/) - /(VA/) - [name]),if(isequal([name],folder,8),[name] /(CD[disc #]/),[myseries] - [myseriesvolume] /(CD[disc #]/) - /(VA/) - [name])),if(isequal([MySeries],unknown,8),if(isequal([name],folder,8),[name],[artist] - [album] /(CD[disc #]/) - [name]),if(isequal([name],folder,8),[name] /(CD[disc#]/),[artist] - [myseries] - [myseriesvolume] /(CD[disc #]/) - [name]))))

<EDIT>
I was thinking a little more about this. Is the workaround for me to write the extra expression steps to not use MC's built in filenaming structure associated to the "assorted" checkbox?

You should use the native plugin for AAC.  External filters are not required or recommended.

In Options > File Types, try picking "Automatic" for AAC.

If that doesn't work, report it as a bug and we'll get it fixed.

Thanks.

I think this bug is very old.
In the tree, selecting Audio or Video or Documents (the roots themselves) displays it's own view.
But this does not work with Images.
When I click on Images it auto opens the last view scheme selected within images rather than the root view. And there is a root view associated with images which you can see by right-clicking Images, Customize View (mine is set to panes: people, places, keywords).

To reproduce:
Expand Images and select one of the view schemes.
Now click on Audio in the tree.
Go back to Images. This should take you to the last view scheme you selected rather than the Images root scheme.
